Beach Women's Volleyball Heads to the Cougar Challenge

The Long Beach State women's volleyball team is set to travel north to Pullman, Wash., to compete in the Cougar Challenge hosted by Washington State. The Beach will open the tournament on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. against the host Cougars, before taking on Gonzaga and Northern Iowa on Friday, Sept. 10 at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. All matches will be live streamed on Pac-12.com. Fans can also follow live stats via StatBroadcast.com.

About the Beach
• Long Beach State enters the Cougar Challenge with a 3-3 overall record.
• The Beach hosted the LBSU Tournament last weekend and went 1-2 with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked UCLA (3-0) and Georgia Tech (3-1), before earning a 3-0 sweep of Portland State.
• Junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams and freshman setter Kasia Partyka were named to the All-Tournament Team.
• Williams also picked up Big West Conference Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
• Williams finished the tournament with 4.90 kills per set, 1.20 digs per set, 0.60 blocks per set, and a .277 attack percentage. On the year, Williams leads the Beach with 4.56 kills per set which leads the Big West and ranks 20th in the nation. Her 5.00 points per set average is good for 25th in the country.
• Partyka led the Beach to a .225 attack percentage at the LBSU Tournament as she distributed 79 assists to average 8.78 per set. She also added 1.44 digs per set, 0.89 kills per set, and 0.56 blocks per set, while hitting .273. This season, Partyka is averaging 8.73 assists per set which puts her fifth in the Big West.
• Freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett has continued her solid play as she is second on the team with 2.92 kills per set to rank eighth in the Big West. She has been dominant from the service line thus far, racking up a total of 14 aces to average 0.56 per set, which leads the league and ranks her in the top 50 in the nation. 
• Sophomore libero Nicole Hoff has led the Beach in digs in four of Long Beach State's six matches. She leads the squad with 3.76 digs per set and comes in sixth in the Big West Conference.
• Freshman middle blocker Kameron Bacon turned in an excellent performance last week at the net as she posted 11 blocks to average 1.10 per set. Bacon registered a career-high seven blocks against Portland State to pace the Beach.

Scouting Washington State
• Washington State hosts the Cougar Challenge after having opened the season on the road at South Carolina and UNLV.
• The Cougars are looking for their first win of the year as they are 0-4 with losses to South Carolina (3-2), Pittsburgh (3-1), Purdue (3-0), and UNLV (3-1).
• WSU is led offensively by Penny Tusa who is averaging 3.00 kills per set. She also adds 1.88 digs per set and 0.31 blocks per set.
• Setter Hannak Pukis has collected 158 assists this season to average 9.88 assists per set to go along with 2.44 digs per set and 0.50 blocks per set.
• Julia Norville, meanwhile, has logged 48 digs in the back row to pace the defensive efforts as she averages 3.00 digs per set. 
• At the net, Magda Jehlarova and Katy Ryan have recorded 14 and 12 blocks respectively. Jehlarova leads the way with 0.88 blocks per set, while Ryan is averaging 0.80.

The Series: The Beach vs. The Cougars
Long Beach State and Washington State will meet for just the fifth time in program history. The Beach lead the all-time series 3-1, however, the Cougars won the last meeting, 3-0, on September 3, 2016 in Long Beach, Calif. Thursday's contest will be the first meeting in Pullman, Wash., as the previous face offs were at neutral sites.

Scouting Gonzaga
• Like Long Beach State, Gonzaga comes into the Cougar Challenge with a 3-3 overall record.
• The Bulldogs are coming off of a 2-1 weekend in which they defeated Seattle (3-0) and Air Force (3-1), before dropping a 3-0 contest to Oklahoma.
• McKenna Marshall is the Bulldogs' leading scorer with 3.48 kills per set on .231 hitting. She also contributes 1.81 digs per set and 0.29 blocks per set. 
• At setter, Brynn Chandler is averaging 9.10 assists per set as she has led the Bulldogs to a .237 team attack percentage. Chandler also leads the squad with 2.19 digs per set, while posting 0.67 blocks per set. Her .409 attack percentage is also tops on the squad.
• At the net, Cara McKenzie has posted 21 blocks to average 1.00 blocks per set. She also has contributed 2.14 kills per set on a .368 hitting percentage.
• Kennedy Croft has been solid at the service line this year racking up 12 aces to average 0.57 per set. She also adds 2.48 kills per set and 1.90 digs per set.

The Series: The Beach vs. The Bulldogs
Long Beach State and Gonzaga will meet for the first time in program history.

Scouting Northern Iowa
• Northern Iowa brings a 2-3 overall record into the Cougar Challenge as the Panthers are looking to get back on the winning track after dropping their last two contests to Kentucky (3-0) and Creighton (3-0) last weekend.
• The Panthers are led by Kira Fallert's 2.56 kills per set, while Emily Holterhaus adds 2.06 kills per set of her own. Holterhaus is also the team leader in aces with seven (0.39 per set).
• Jenna Brandt and Tayler Alden split time at setter as the duo has combined for a 10.06 assists per set average. Brandt leads the way with 4.44 assists per set, while Alden adds 4.33 assists per set.
• Defensively, Kaylee Donner paces the back row with 3.15 digs per set, while Holterhaus adds 2.06.
• At the net, Carly Spies has been dominant posting 24 total blocks to average 1.33 blocks per set. Kaylissa Arndorfer has posted 15 blocks for an average of 0.83 blocks per set as the duo have led the team to a 2.33 blocks per set average.

The Series: The Beach vs. The Panthers
Long Beach State and Northern Iowa will meet for just the fourth time in program history. The Beach hold a slight edge over the Panthers with a 2-1 record. However, UNI defeated the Beach, 3-1, in their last meeting on September 15, 2012 at the Bradley Invitational in Bradley, Ill.

Williams for the Win
Long Beach State junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row after leading the Beach at the LBSU Tournament last weekend.

Williams was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 4.90 kills per set as she totaled 49 kills over three matches. The product out of Los Angeles, Calif., recorded double-digit kills in each match including a 22-kill performance against No. 16 Georgia Tech. Williams has now registered double-figure kills in all six matches thus far and has recorded 10-career 20-plus kill showings.

In addition to her strong offensive showing last weekend, Williams also contributed 1.20 digs per set and 0.60 blocks per set against No. 18 UCLA, No. 16 Georgia Tech, and Portland State.

Hot Start
Long Beach State women's volleyball started the 2021 campaign off sweeping the Big West Conference weekly awards as Kashauna Williams took home Offensive Player of the Week Honors, while Nicole Hoff garnered Defensive Player of the Week accolades, and Erykah Lovett claimed Freshman of the Week honors.

The Beach went 2-1 last week at the Boise State Invitational as they were led by junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams who earned All-Tournament Team accolades before taking home Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors. Williams earned the honors for the second time in her career and finished the week averaging 4.33 kills per set, 1.40 digs per set, 0.47 blocks per set, while hitting .217. She currently ranks 26th in the nation in kills per set and is third in the country in total kills with 65. Her season-high 25 kills versus Montana State was just one shy of her career-best.

Hoff, a sophomore libero, claimed her first-ever conference honors after logging 3.73 digs per set while directing the Beach in the back row. She recorded double-digit digs in each of the three matches including a career-high 22-dig showing against Dixie State. 

Lovett made the most of her collegiate debut as the freshman outside hitter notched a double-double in each contest including a career-best 20-kill, 19-dig performance versus Dixie State. She finished the week with 3.27 kills per set, 2.67 digs per set, and 0.60 aces per set. She totaled nine aces on the week, which is good for 12th in the nation.

Kashing In
Junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams has started the 2021 campaign off on a roll. In two weeks, Williams has earned two All-Tournament Team honors and a pair of Big West Conference Player of the Week awards. She is currently leading Long Beach State with 4.56 kills per set which leads the Big West and ranks her 20th in the nation. If that weren't enough, Williams also contributes 1.32 digs per set, 0.52 blocks per set, and has tallied four service aces.

Hot Hitting
Senior middle blocker Miranda Canez continues her hotting hitting as she has knocked down 34 kills on 66 swings, while committing just six errors for an attack percentage of .424, which leads the Beach. Canez is averaging 1.36 kills per set, while also ranking second on the squad with 14 blocks to average 0.56 blocks per set.

You Lovett to See it
Freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett has not missed a beat since making her collegiate debut two weeks ago. The Newnan, Ga., native is second on the team with 2.92 kills per set which ranks her eighth in the Big West. She is also leading the Beach with 14 aces to average 0.56 aces per set which is tops in the league. Additionally, Lovett has shown her versatility as she averages 2.68 digs per set and 0.32 blocks per set. 

Can You Dig It?
Sophomore libero Nicole Hoff has been solid in the back row for the Beach racking up 94 digs to average 3.76 digs per set which ranks her sixth in the Big West. Her efforts earned her Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors after the first week of the season. Also contributing to Long Beach State's defensive efforts are Tia Chavira (3.75 digs per set) and Erykah Lovett (2.68 digs per set).

Helping Hands
Freshman setter Kasia Partyka made her collegiate debut against Montana State and promptly registered a double-double with 57 assists and 11 digs. She has continued to show her talent as she was named to the Long Beach State Tournament All-Tournament Team after averaging 8.78 assists per set, while adding 1.44 digs per set, 0.89 kills per set, and 0.56 blocks per set. Partyka has been a solid all-around player for the Beach as she has led LBSU to a .219 attack percentage on the year with an average of 8.73 assists per set to rank fifth in the Big West.

Block Party
Freshman Kameron Bacon had quite the weekend at the net at the LBSU Tournament. The product out of Fontana, Calif., finished the tournament with 11 blocks to average 1.10 blocks per set. She concluded the weekend strong with a career-high seven-block performance against Portland State. On the year, she has put up a team-leading 16 blocks to average 0.80 blocks per set. Hot on her heels is senior Miranda Canez who has totaled 14 blocks to average 0.56 blocks per set, while Kashauna Williams has posted 13 blocks to average 0.52. Rounding out the double-digit blockers on the LBSU stat sheet is senior Avery Nelson who has recorded 11 blocks for an average of 0.50 blocks per set.

Among the Big West
Long Beach State has four players who rank in the top 10 in the Big West. Leading the way is junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams who leads the league in kills per set with 4.56. Also leading the conference is freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett whose 0.56 aces per set is top in the Big West. Lovett's name also appears in kills per set as she is eighth with 2.92. Freshman setter Kasia Partyka comes in fifth in the league with 8.73 assists per set, while sophomore libero Nicole Hoff ranks sixth with 3.76 digs per set.

On a National Scale
In the nation, Long Beach State has two players who rank in the top 50. Kashauna Williams' 4.56 kills per set are good for 20th in the nation, while her 5.00 points per set rank her 25th. Erykah Lovett's 0.56 aces per set rank her 49th in the country.

Next Up
Long Beach State returns home for its longest homestand of the season as the Beach host San Diego State and San Diego to close the preseason, before welcoming Big West competition in Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, and Cal State Fullerton. The Beach will face SDSU on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., before taking on No. 25 San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. 

Big West Conference action begins on Friday, Sept. 24 against Cal Poly with first serve set for 7 p.m. LBSU will then host CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m., before hosting Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
