Kashauna Williams leads all scorers with 22 kills, Erykah Lovett registers a double-double

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team got off to a slow start, but bounded back for an incredible showing in the third set, before dropping the fourth to fall 3-1 [15-25, 16-25, 33-31, 15-25] to No. 16 Georgia Tech on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (2-3) hit .204 in the match to the Yellow Jacket's (4-0) .375 attack percentage. Georgia Tech held the edge in kills (67-49), assists (61-45), aces (6-2), digs (63-59), and blocks (14.0-4.0). Individually, however, Long Beach State's junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams recorded her ninth 20-kill performance to lead all scorers with 22 kills on a .263 clip.
Joining Williams in double-digit kills was freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett who finished the contest with her fourth double-double in five matches as she posted 13 kills and 14 digs.
Lovett's 14 digs tied sophomore libero Nicole Hoff for the team lead. Hoff was solid in the back row, while also contributing six assists and two kills. The duo led a trio of players in double-figure digs as senior outside hitter Avery Nelson logged a new career-high with 11.
At the net, freshman middle blocker Kameron Bacon put up three blocks, while Williams added two.
Freshman setter Kasia Partyka set the tone offensively with 38 assists, while adding nine digs to narrowly miss a double-double.
Georgia Tech started off the match on a roll as the Yellow Jackets used a 10-0 run in the first set to break the game open as they cruised to a 25-15 victory.
The second set was two early ties before the Yellow Jackets rattled off six-straight points to break a 7-7 tie (13-7). The Beach stayed within striking distance, but Georgia Tech led the remainder of the frame before taking a 2-0 set lead with a 25-16 win.
Long Beach State and Georgia Tech battled each other through 20 ties and seven lead changes in the third set. The Beach out-hit the Yellow Jackets .315-.300 and knocked down 22 kills in the frame to put on a show for the crowd. The two teams found themselves deadlocked at 23-23 before Williams served up an ace to send it to the first of nine set/match points. Following that ace, the Beach and the Yellow Jackets traded points until Long Beach State won the set on a kill by Lovett followed by a Georgia Tech attack error to force a fourth set in an exciting contest.
The fourth and final set began close with a 2-2 tie, however Georgia Tech used several runs to jump out in front by 10 (20-10). The Yellow Jackets controlled much of the fourth set as they out-hit the Beach .467-.167 en route to winning the set and match, 25-15.
Georgia Tech received a solid showing from Bianca Bertolino who posted a double-double with 21 kills and 12 digs. She led a trio of Yellow Jackets who scored in double-figures including Julia Bergmann (17 kills) and Mariana Brambilla (15 kills). Bergmann also notched a double-double as she added 14 digs to go along with three aces and six blocks. Setter Matti McKissock led the offensive with 53 assists, while adding nine digs.
Long Beach State will face Portland State on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. to close out the Long Beach State Tournament. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
