Long Beach State Suffers 3-0 Sweep Against No. 18 UCLA

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams led all scorers with 16 kills on a .371 attack percentage, but the Beach were unable to overcome a tough showing by No. 18 UCLA as LBSU fell, 3-0 [16-25, 13-25, 21-25] on Thursday at the Walter Pyramid.
The contest saw the Bruins (2-0) out-hit the Beach (2-2) .413 to .253. However the real difference was made in the serve and pass game as Long Beach State committed 13 service errors, while logging just one ace. Meanwhile, UCLA tallied eight aces to just four errors in the match.

Williams led the Long Beach State offensive attack as she knocked down 16 kills on 35 attempts, while committing just three errors. She also added a pair of digs and two blocks.
Kasia Partyka and Tia Chavira split time at setter as Partyka finished the match with 15 assists, while Chavira added 12.
Defensively, the Beach were paced by sophomore libero Nicole Hoff who concluded the night with 10 digs and six assists. Meanwhile, senior middle blocker Miranda Canez led the Beach with three blocks at the net.
Long Beach State and UCLA started the match trading points early on in the first set. However, a 4-0 UCLA run gave the Bruins a lead it would hold the rest of the way as the visitor's claimed the first set, 25-16.
UCLA hit .462 in the second set and used a 4-1 run to take an 8-5 advantage over Long Beach State. The Bruins pushed their lead to as many as 12 before defeating the Beach, 25-13.
Down 2-0 heading into the third set, Long Beach State kept the game close. An ace from Chavira would bring the beach within two (11-9), but UCLA would surge ahead pushing it to match point, 24-17. The Beach would not go quietly. Long Beach State rattled off four-straight points on kills from Erykah Lovett and Kashauna Williams, along with a block assists from Williams and Canez to make it a 24-21 game forcing a UCLA timeout. However, following the break in action, the Bruins came back and put the set and match away with a kill from Iman Ndiaye.
The Bruins were led by Mac May's 11 kills and four aces. Shelby Martin, the UCLA setter, distributed 27 assists to pace the offense, while adding five digs, four aces, and two blocks. Defensively, UCLA was led by Zoe Fleck who had 11 digs, while Anna Dodson and Francesca Alupei each posted four blocks.
Long Beach State will face No. 16 Georgia Tech on Friday, Sept. 3 on the second day of the LBSU Tournament. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
