In front of a standing-room only crowd, the Beach can't mount comeback against Bruins.
Long Beach, Calif. — After nearly two years since the No. 6 Long Beach State men's water polo team played in front of its home crowd, the Beach returned to a standing-room only crowd at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center to take on No. 1 UCLA.
The Beach fell short of its comeback as the Bruins took a 9-6 victory behind a solid defensive performance that kept LBSU's potent offense at bay on Friday night.
In a tightly contested first quarter, UCLA took an early lead in the first quarter after Felix Brozyna-Vilim found the back of the cage.
Junior Rafael Vergara knotted the game at 1 when he fired a shot on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 13 seconds left in the period.
UCLA (8-0) took the lead right back when Tommy Gruwell found the back of the cage with 24 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Bruins led the rest of the way as the Beach (8-1) couldn't mount a comeback.
At halftime UCLA led 5-2 after Jake Cavano found the back of the net.
With a solid defensive performance, junior Andrej Bosanac kept the Beach in it as he had eight saves in the cage.
Matt Morris and Theodoros Pateros led the Beach with two goals apiece.
The Beach will be back in action when they travel to Stanford and then compete at the MPSF Tournament.
