EUGENE, Ore. – Long Beach State will have two athletes competing in the NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon this week. Aaron Booth will be competing in the men's Decathlon while Jason Smith will compete in both men's Long Jump and High Jump.
Â
Smith becomes the first Beach athlete to participate in two events in the same championships since 2011, and the first jumper to accomplish it since 2006. It will be his second Long Jump appearance after posting a 20th-place finish back in 2018. He also qualified for both events during the 2020 indoor season, but the championships were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
The San Bruno native is coming off a record-setting performance at the Preliminaries in Texas, jumping 26 feet, 1.75 inches in the Long Jump beating the Long Beach State record by a quarter of an inch. The mark was good for a third-place finish and the fourth-best jump in the history of the West Region Prelims. He followed that with an eighth-place finish in the High Jump, clearing seven feet, 2.25 inches.
Â
His season-best mark and school record in Long Jump ranks tied for 12th-best in the NCAA while his High Jump mark is good for 17th best.
Â
Booth will be the first member of Long Beach State to compete in the Decathlon championships since 2011. This will be his second time competing at the NCAAs after claiming a sixth-place finish in 2019 while at Kansas State.
Â
The junior transfer dominated the decathlon at the Big West Championships with 7,520 total points to claim the title and the second-highest mark in Long Beach State history. It ranked 13th best in the West Region and 21st in the nation, automatically qualifying him for the NCAA Championships.
