Johnathan Lavallee and Noah Carbajal combine for Long Beach State’s sixth shutout of the season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (25-15, 23-14 BWC) pitching tossed another gem, blanking UC Davis (14-40, 8-29 BWC) in game one on Friday night. The 7-0 victory marks the sixth shutout of the season for the Dirtbags.
Johnathan Lavallee continued his dominant stretch on Friday nights tossing seven shutout innings against the Aggies. The right-hander surrendered just three hits and a walk while striking out six as he moved to 8-1 on the year. He sports a 0.60 ERA with an opponent average of .137 in his last four starts.
Offensively, the Dirtbags connected for six extra-base hits in the ballgame, all of which drove in at least one run.
For the fifth consecutive game, Long Beach State scored in the first inning as Isaac Ramirez connected for a monster, two-run home run. His third homer of the season, it was clocked at 107mph off the bat and a projected 441 feet.
After being kept off the board for four innings, the LBSU bats got hot again in the sixth inning as the first four hitters of the frame combined for the cycle.
Chase Luttrell got the inning started with a leadoff home run on the first pitch he saw. He now has seven home runs on the season, just one behind the team lead.
Ramirez followed the homer with a single before coming in to score on Sebastian Murillo's team-leading tenth double. The triple came off the bat of Calvin Estrada as he scorched a ball into the right-center gap to bring in the third Dirtbag run of the inning.
Connor Kokx had a quiet night until the seventh when the redshirt freshman sent a missile down the left field line for a solo home run. The Dirtbag leadoff man joins Luttrell with his seventh homer of the year.
Long Beach State was not done yet though as Estrada led off the eighth with an infield single and hustled around to score on a Toren Craig double.
Lavallee handed the ball off to Noah Carbajal for the eighth inning. The freshman would retire the Aggies in order in his first frame, but face some traffic in the ninth. After a pair of walks started the inning and a one-out single loaded the bases, the Dirtbags went around the horn to secure the 7-0 victory for the Dirtbags.
With the victory, Long Beach State has now won 11 of their last 13 games and have held opponents to two runs or less in 11 of the last 15.
The Dirtbags will be back at it tomorrow for their doubleheader with the Aggies. First pitch of game one will be at 12:00 p.m.
