Dirtbags Total 14 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of UC Davis

5/29/2021 6:54:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State scored seven runs in each game giving them the series victory over the Aggies.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (27-15, 25-14 BWC) totaled 14 runs on Saturday against UC Davis (14-42, 8-31 BWC) for a doubleheader sweep. The Dirtbags scored seven runs in each game taking game one, 7-1, and game two, 7-2.

With the two wins, Long Beach State secures their fourth straight series win and have now won five-straight games.

Alfredo Ruiz was the star of game one tossing 6.2 innings of one-run ball. The left-hander scattered six hits and a pair of walks while striking out four Aggies. He handed the ball off to Ethan Clough in the seventh and the sophomore took care of business with 2.1 scoreless frames allowing just one hit while striking out three.

The Dirtbags scored all their runs early plating two runs in the second, two in the third, and three in the fourth.

After a Davis run came across in the top half of the first, Connor Burns answered with a two-run shot in the bottom half. The freshman now has three home runs on the year to go along with eight RBI.

Calvin Estrada swung a very hot bat on Saturday starting with a monster two-run homer to left-center giving the Dirtbags a three-run lead. The senior now has a team-high nine bombs on the year and leads the team with 32 RBI.

The Dirtbags capitalized on a couple of errors for a run in the fourth before Chase Luttrell singled home two more to make it a 7-1 ballgame.

Ruiz and Clough had things covered from there as the Aggies were kept off the board in the final six innings of game.

Game two was the tightest contest of the weekend so far between the Dirtbags and Aggies.

UC Davis scored first again with two runs in the top of the first off of Luis Ramirez. The right-hander settled down after that retiring 10 of the next 12 hitters until the Aggies pushed another run across in the fifth and sixth.

For the Long Beach State offense, Tanner Carlson got the scoring started with a two-RBI single in the second. The sophomore had a tremendous game going 2-for-3 with a double and three runs driven in.

Luttrell and Estrada came through once again with RBI singles in the third to break a 2-2 tie and give the Dirtbags their first lead in game two.

Carlson's third RBI of the game came in the fourth on a sacrifice fly following a leadoff triple from Alex Pimentel.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Dirtbags held a one-run lead before the Aggies fell apart. An error, double, and intentional walk set up a bases loaded situation where Aggie pitching hit Sebastian Murillo to force in one run and a weak groundout from Luttrell brought in another.

The LBSU bullpen shut it down the rest of the way with Matt Fields tossing 2.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits while striking out a pair. Devereaux Harrison came in for the ninth and needed just five pitches to notch his tenth save of the season and secure the 7-4 victory.

Estrada had a monster day, starting both games in right field, going a combined 5-for-8 at the plate with a homer, and three RBI.

Luttrell extended his reached base streak to 19 games with one hit in each ballgame while Murillo saw his streak snapped at 17 after going 0-for-4 in game two.

A win tomorrow means another sweep for the Dirtbags and helps their case for an at-large bid in the postseason. First pitch of the season finale will be at 1:00 p.m. at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field live on ESPN3.
