Dirtbags Blank No. 24 UC Irvine in Black and Blue Rivalry Finale

5/2/2021 4:14:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State forced a series split with the Anteaters picking up a 9-0 victory on Sunday.

IRVINE, Calif. – Long Beach State (14-13, 12-12 BWC) blanked No. 24 UC Irvine (26-14, 18-6 BWC) with a dominant 9-0 victory in the Black and Blue rivalry series finale. It is the second shutout for the Dirtbag pitching staff this season and they have now tossed 17-straight innings without allowing a run.

Jack Noble got the start in the Sunday matinee and dazzled. The sophomore right-hander tossed five shutout innings allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out five. He now has a sub-3.00 ERA for the first time this season.

The Dirtbags got the scoring started in the top of the third courtesy of a massive, two-run home run from Calvin Estrada. The senior is now tied for the team lead with five home runs on the season.

After a pair of strikeouts started the fourth, Sebastian Murillo doubled and Estrada was intentionally walked putting a pair of runners on for Chase Luttrell. The sophomore would lace a ball down the right field line for a double plating two.

The Dirtbags would go on to score two more runs in the fifth after Brennan Rozell and Connor Burns came up with back-to-back RBI singles. It is the second time this season, Long Beach State plated multiple runs in three consecutive innings.

Another run would come across in the seventh after a Luttrell triple and a Connor Kokx sac fly made it a seven-run ballgame.

The LBSU offense was not done yet though as a single and hit by pitch put two runners on for Murillo. The true freshman proceeded to launch one into left field for a two-out, two-RBI double giving the Dirtbags a nine-run lead.

Devereaux Harrison took over in the sixth and finished out the game for the Dirtbags. In four shutout innings, he scattered four hits and a walk en route to his league-leading ninth save of the year.

Murillo led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and the two runs driven in. That sets career-highs in every offensive category in his young LBSU career.

Eight of the Dirtbag starters reached base on Sunday and seven of the nine recorded at least one hit.

Kokx, unfortunately, was held in check on Sunday as both his hit streak and reached base streak came to an end.

The Dirtbags remain on the road next weekend as they head to Riverside for a four-game set with the Highlanders.
