Lavallee Punches Out 13 in Complete Game Shutout against UC Riverside

Junior Johnathan Lavallee spun a gem on Friday night with a career-high 13 strikeouts in a complete game shutout.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Johnathan Lavallee was the story, tossing his first career complete game shutout as Long Beach State (15-13, 12-12 BWC) took down UC Riverside (14-22, 12-17 BWC) in the series opener. Dirtbag pitching has now tossed 25 consecutive scoreless innings over the last three games.
Lavallee tossed the best game of his collegiate career allowing just two hits in his nine innings of work. The junior also struck out 13 Highlanders while walking none.
It is the first complete game shutout by a Dirtbag starter since Adam Seminaris on May 23, 2019. It also marks the first time Long Beach State has had back-to-back shutouts since May 2-3, 2014.
The first run of the ballgame for the Dirtbags came in the fourth inning. Calvin Estrada got it going with a one-out walk and ended up at third on a Chase Luttrell double into left-center. Jonathon Long came up next and pushed the run across with an RBI groundout to give the Dirtbags a 1-0 lead.
Long got another rally going in the seventh leading off the frame with a single followed by an Isaac Ramirez single. With two-on and one-out, Brennan Rozell sent one through the left side to plate the second run of the ballgame.
The Dirtbags would break things open a bit in the eighth on a Connor Kokx RBI double and an Estrada RBI single. The back-to-back knocks extended the lead to four runs and that was more than enough support for Lavallee.
The junior right-hander allowed a single in the second inning, but then retired 17-straight Highlanders before an infield single ended that streak in the bottom of the eighth. He responded by retiring the final five batters to polish off the performance.
From first pitch to final out, the game was just two hours and one minute, tying the fourth-fastest game in Long Beach State history.
The Dirtbags will look to keep things going tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Highlanders. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
