Softball Finishes Sweep Of Titans To Claim Big West Championship
5/15/2021 6:05:00 PM | Softball
Kellie White finished off a spectacular series with a complete game shutout to earn a third win over the Titans.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – It was old-fashioned softball, and Long Beach State picked up the one run needed to punch a ticket to the NCAA Regionals and sweep rival Cal State Fullerton to claim the Big West Championship on a memorable senior day in Long Beach.
Needing to sweep Cal State Fullerton (38-15, 21-3 Big West) who had entered the series unbeaten in Big West play, Long Beach State (30-9, 22-2 Big West) picked up two wins behind strong pitching from senior Kellie White and made their own opportunity Saturday, a winner-take-all affair against the Titans.
White was spectacular on the day. The senior threw every pitch of the three wins and was at her very best Saturday, striking out eight batters and allowing just four hits in a complete game shutout.
Long Beach State threatened but were unable to break through against Titans' starter Sophie Frost, while White was in complete command through the first four innings.
Rylie Seip began a two-out rally in the fifth inning with a single. Alyssa Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and Suzy Brookshire had a seeing-eye single to load the bases in front of senior Breezy Wise. Wise then drew a walk for the only RBI of the game to give the Beach a 1-0 lead.
That was all White needed. The Titans would threaten in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but a groundout to Cam Cecil at shortstop closed out the win for Long Beach State.
With the victory, Long Beach State softball claimed its ninth Big West title and the first since 2014, and also secured the program's 25th NCAA postseason appearance. Following the contest, the Beach also celebrated its seniors who all played a critical role in the championship season in Suzy Brookshire, Breezy Wise, Alyssa Gonzalez and Kellie White.
At the agreement of both teams, the previously scheduled non-conference game following game one was canceled.
Long Beach State will find out its postseason destination on Sunday at 6 p.m., when the NCAA Tournament Selection Show will be shown on ESPN2.
