Long Beach State dominated the first game, but fell in a close battle in game two.
Charlie Loust was arguably the biggest story of the day going 5-for-9 with a home run and eight RBI across the two games. His six RBI in game one is the most in a single-game by a Dirtbag since the 2011 season.
Game one was all Long Beach State from the start as Connor Kokx led the game off a triple. He would come in to score on a Calvin Estrada RBI single.
After a Jonathon Long single put two runners on, Loust launched a three-run home run to left-center. It marks the second home run of the season for the redshirt freshman.
After a four-run first inning, the Dirtbags padded their lead with five more in the second. Loust had the first run-scoring knock plating two runs on a single to left. After an Anteater pitching change, Isaac Ramirez welcomed the new UCI arm with a three-run shot down the left field line. The home run is the first of his LBSU career.
Long Beach State would tack on another run on a wild pitch in the third before Loust drove in his sixth run of the game in the fifth.
An RBI single from Cole Joy in the sixth and a sac fly from Sebastian Murillo would bring in the final two runs of the game for the Dirtbags.
On the other side of the ball, Alfredo Ruiz was tremendous on the bump tossing his third quality start of the year. The southpaw went 6.2 innings allowing four runs, only three earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out five Anteaters.
After surrendering a two-RBI triple in the seventh, Ruiz handed the ball off to Jake Rons. The freshman right-hander closed it out with 2.1 scoreless innings allowing just one walk and two batters while striking out a pair, securing the 13-4 victory for Long Beach State.
Game two had the makings of another offensive battle as the Dirtbags and Anteaters combined for five runs in the first inning.
After an Estrada walk and Luttrell single put two runners on, the hottest bat in the lineup came to the plate with two away. Loust would come through with a single up the middle plating both runners on giving him his seventh and eighth RBI of the day.
Unfortunately, UC Irvine responded with three runs on five consecutive singles and a sac fly from the first six batters of the bottom of the first.
From there, it was all about the pitching as Luis Ramirez tossing six scoreless innings allowing just one hit and two walks for the rest of his outing. The right-hander turned his rough first inning into his fourth quality start of the season.
Ramirez handed the ball off to Ethan Clough, who tossed a scoreless eighth surrendering a walk while striking out a pair.
For the Anteaters, Michael Frias allowed just four more baserunners after the first frame. The right-hander exited the game after 6.2 innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out nine and walking just one. The UCI bullpen turned in 2.1 perfect innings to lock up the 3-2 victory.
It would not be a day of recapping Dirtbag baseball without mentioning Connor Kokx. The redshirt freshman recorded knocks in both games on Saturday extending his hit streak to 16 games and his reached base streak to 27 consecutive games.
Long Beach State will look for a series split with No. 24 UC Irvine in a Sunday matinee at Anteater Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
