Dirtbags Head to Irvine for Series Against No. 24 Anteaters

Long Beach State begins an eight-game road stretch with a series at UC Irvine this weekend.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State hits the road for a four-game set against No. 24 UC Irvine this weekend. All four games will be streamed on ESPN3.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Dirtbags returned to league play last weekend taking on No. 25 UC Santa Barbara at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field taking a series split against the Gauchos.
• Friday was a comeback victory for Long Beach State as back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning led to a three-run inning to come out on top, 4-3.
• Game two was a pitchers' dual for the first six innings, but a Gaucho grand slam ended the scoreless tie and UCSB went on to shutout LBSU 6-0.
• Game two of the doubleheader was a back-and-forth affair, but ultimately went to the Dirtbags, 5-4, after a three-run seventh.
• In the finale, the nation was treated to another back-and-forth game on ESPNU. Unfortunately, the Dirtbags fell, 8-5, in 12 innings.
ABOUT THE DIRTBAGS
• The Dirtbags are currently sixth place in the Big West standings with a 10-10 record in league play; 12-11 overall.
• Long Beach State currently ranks in lower half of the conference offensively, slashing .255/.342/.378 in their 20 Big West games. Their 23 total home runs this season is the fourth most despite playing less games than majority of the conference.
• On the mound, the pitching staff ranks second with a 3.71 ERA and first with a .232 opponent batting average. They have totaled 198 strikeouts in league play thus far, the second most in the conference.
• Defensively, the Dirtbags are in fourth place with a .976 fielding percentage. They have made 17 errors in 707 total chances.
SCOUTING THE ANTEATERS
• UC Irvine enters the weekend as the top team in the Big West and entered the national rankings this week sitting as high as No. 24 in the polls.
• The Anteaters are coming off a series victory over Oregon State winning 2 of 3, both in walkoff fashion.
• UCI is tops in the conference with a team slashline of .333/.429/.503. Jacob Castro leads the team and Big West with a .440 average and .533 on-base percentage while Dillon Tatum paces the league with eight home runs.
• The Anteater pitching staff leads the Big West with a 3.25 ERA and third with a .240 opponent average. Nick Pinto (2.12) and Michael Frias (2.48) both rank top ten in ERA while Frias' 35 strikeouts is tied for fifth.
