Lavallee, Fields Combine to Shutout Cal Poly in Series Opener

The Dirtbags recorded their first shutout of the season taking down the Mustangs, 7-0.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (7-6, 7-6 BWC) shut out Cal Poly (14-11, 4-5 BWC) in the series opener by the score of 7-0. It is the first shutout of a Big West opponent since May 19, 2018.
Johnathan Lavallee got the nod for the series opener on Friday night and stepped up in a big way. The junior tossed seven scoreless innings allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out a career-high eight Mustangs. His season ERA is now a microscopic 0.48 in 18.2 innings of work.
Long Beach State got the scoring started in the third inning as Jesse Lopez reached on a fielding error to give the Dirtbags a leadoff baserunner. Santino Rivera came up two batters later and smoked a double over the center fielder's head to plate the first run. After a Brennan Rozell walk, Chase Luttrell singled through the right side to plate Rivera and give the Dirtbags a two-run lead.
After a pair of singles put two runners on in the bottom half of the fifth, Rozell singled down the third base line to plate the third run of the game.
That was more than enough run support for Lavallee who tossed 6.1 innings before allowing his first and only hit.
Just for insurance, the Dirtbags would put up a four-spot in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of a bases loaded, three-RBI double from Jonathon Long followed by an RBI single from Rivera.
Matt Fields came on in the eighth and was stellar tossing two shutout innings en route to his first save of the season.
Connor Kokx extended his reached base streak once again, going 2-for-5 with a pair of singles.
Long Beach State will look to keep things rolling tomorrow as they will play a doubleheader against Cal Poly. First pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
