Long Beach State was shutout in the first game of the doubleheader, but bounced back for a game two victory.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (12-10, 10-9 BWC) was shutout, 6-0, in the first game of the doubleheader against No. 25 UC Santa Barbara (26-12, 16-7 BWC), but bounced back for a 5-4 victory in game two.
Game one was a six-inning pitchers' dual as neither offense could get any offense. The Gauchos ended the scoreless tie in the seventh with a grand slam and tacked on two more in the ninth.
Luis Ramirez got the start for the Dirtbags and finished with a line of 6.1 innings allowing four earned runs on five hits, two walks, and five hit batters despite tossing six shutout frames to open up his outing.
On the other side, the Gaucho pitchers neutralized the Long Beach State offense as Rodney Boone and Carter Benbrook combined for a shutout scatter six hits and four walks while striking out 14.
Six different Dirtbags recorded the hits, including Jesse Lopez, who recorded the only LBSU extra-base hit with a sixth inning double.
In game two, Alfredo Ruiz was given the ball and had a nice bounce-back performance after his rough start at Pacific. The left-hander tossed five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six.
The Gauchos jumped out to the early lead with a run in the second on an RBI single.
Long Beach State responded in the fourth on a Lopez two-RBI single through the left side, but could not hold the lead for long as UCSB answered with a run in the fifth to tie it up at two runs each.
It remained that way until the seventh inning as an RBI double for the Gauchos gave them the lead, 3-2, but was immediately answered by the Dirtbags in the bottom half of the inning.
After a Tanner Carlson single and Toren Craig walk put two runners on, Calvin Estrada connected on a double down the right field line to tie the game up. After the Gauchos opted to intentionally walk Kokx to load the bases, a wild pitch allowed Lopez to score and give the Dirtbags the lead.
Back-to-back walks including a bases loaded free pass to Javier Rosales gave Long Beach State a two-run lead heading into the eighth.
The first pitch from Matt Fields in the eighth was launched over the left-center wall for a leadoff home run and cut the LBSU lead to just one. After a strikeout and a walk, Coach Valenzuela opted to go to the bullpen as Devereaux Harrison entered, looking for a five-out save.
A pair of popouts got him out of the inning to maintain the lead and despite back-to-back two-out singles in the ninth, the freshman right-hander was able to shut the door for his league-leading eighth save.
Connor Kokx led the offense in game two, going 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored. He also reached base twice in game one, so his on-base streak now stands at 22 consecutive games.
Lopez also had a nice day with a 1-for-4 performance in each game including a pair of RBI.
The 5-4 game two victory for the Dirtbags guarantees them at least a series split, but they will look for the series win over No. 25 UC Santa Barbara tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on ESPNU.
