Long Beach State Heads to Northridge for Matador Invitational

The outdoor track and field team hits the road again as they compete in the Matador Invitational hosted by CSUN.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State hits the road again as they head to Northridge for the Matador Invitational on Friday.

The distance runners posted some remarkable times at the Bryan Clay Invitational last week, led by Arturo Sotomayor. The senior transfer set a new school record in the 5000m Run at 14:03.95 breaking the previous mark posted in 2004.

Jason Smith is coming off his second Big West Field Athlete of the Week after a double victory in the High Jump and Long Jump last weekend at the Long Beach Invitational. The senior is currently riding an undefeated streak in both events.

Clare Gibson actually made it a sweep of the High Jumps for the Beach bringing home a win on the women's side of the event.

The throwers continued their string of successes at the Jack Rose Track last weekend, including their fourth consecutive one-two finish in the men's Discus Throw. They dominated as Alec Jones, Charlie Vernoy, and Sebastian Coleman finished one-two-three in the event.

Marcos Gonzalez and Michael Magula also picked up their second wins of the season in the men's Javelin and men's Pole Vault, respectively, for the Beach.

The action at CSUN begins Friday at 9:00 a.m. with the Hammer Throw, Javelin, and Pole Vault.
