Long Beach State powered their way to a doubleheader sweep over the Matadors on Saturday.
LONG BEACH STATE, Calif. – Long Beach State (3-4, 3-4 BWC) swept the Saturday doubleheader against CSUN (2-5, 2-5 BWC) with a 7-3 win in game one and a 10-4 win in game two.
The Matadors got the ball rolling in the first game with a run in the top of the first, but once again Long Beach State starter Luis Ramirez would settle in. Posting his second quality start of the season, the right-hander went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out nine Matadors.
CSUN tacked on their second run in the top of the fourth, but the Dirtbags had an immediate response as Brennan Rozell came through with an RBI double down the right field line.
The Matador pitching staff would struggle in the bottom half of the fifth after an Aidan Malm RBI single as a pair of wild pitches gave the Dirtbags the lead.
Charlie Loust put the game out of reach in the sixth with a two-run home run, a 108mph shot to left field, marking the first of his career.
CSUN put a run on the board in the seventh on a solo shot, but the Dirtbags answered getting the run back in the eighth.
Devereaux Harrison came out of the bullpen for the eighth and was near perfect in his two innings of work. The right-hander struck out four while allowing a walk en route to his second save of the season.
After the forty-minute break, Jack Noble came out for the start in game two. The sophomore transfer had a much better outing than his first start of the season, going 4.2 innings allowing three runs and striking out five.
The Dirtbag offense was the story of the game though, blasting three home runs and posting their first double-digit scoring game of the season.
After scoring an unearned run in the first, Jesse Lopez would blast his first career home run in the bottom of the second. Loust would come up later in the inning and continue his solid day at the plate with a two-RBI double.
The Dirtbags got their second home run of the game in the bottom of the third as Calvin Estrada blasted a solo shot to dead center, his second of the season.
CSUN would respond with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, cutting the Long Beach State lead to just two runs.
However, the LBSU bats were too hot as they loaded the bases for Estrada, who blasted a grand slam for his second homer of the ballgame.
The Matadors would plate another run in the eighth, but once again the Dirtbags had an answer as Lopez came through with an RBI single following an Estrada double.
After another CSUN run came across in the top of the ninth, Ethan Clough would finish his two innings and slam the door on the Matadors.
Estrada set career-highs in hits (3), runs (3), home runs (2), RBI (5), and total bases (10) in game two, and became the first Dirtbag with a multi-home run game since David Banuelos on March 25, 2017. He's also the first Dirtbag to record five RBI in a game since Jacob Hughey did it March 29, 2018.
Connor Kokx extended his on-base streak to eight games going back to the end of the 2020 season, and set the program record for most hit by pitches in a single game with four HBPs in game two.
The Dirtbags will look for the series win in a Sunday matinee against the Matadors. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
