Long Beach State could not come up with the big hit they needed, falling to the Matadors 6-1.
LONG BEACH STATE, Calif. – Long Beach State (3-5, 3-5 BWC) could not get anything going offensively, falling 6-1 in the series finale against CSUN (3-5, 3-5 BWC) on Sunday. It gives the Dirtbags a series split with the Matadors.
Chase Luttrell and Brennan Rozell, each posted multi-hit games going 2-for-4 at the plate. Connor Kokx once again reached base multiple times, the seventh time in eight games as he went 1-for-3 with a walk.
On the mound, Basilio Pacheco got the start but only last 2.1 innings surrendering three runs on hits while striking out three. Jonathan Carlos would relieve the lefty going 1.1 innings allowing an unearned run while struggling with command, walking four Matadors.
Matt Fields pitched very well, keeping the Dirtbags in the game with 3.1 shutout innings allowing just two baserunners while striking out four. In his three appearances of 2021, the right-hander has yet to allow a run.
CSUN controlled the tempo the whole game scoring a run in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth while Blaine Traxel kept the Dirtbag offense in check. Traxel pitched on Friday but came out for the Sunday start and tossed seven innings allowing just one unearned run on eight hits.
Long Beach State could not get anything going against Traxel until the seventh when pinch hitter Chris Jimenez roped a double down the right field line and an error on the play got him to third. He would come in to score on a Toren Craig RBI groundout, but that would be the only run to come across.
The Matadors would plate two more runs in the top of the ninth for extra insurance, but Blake Schriever would lock the game down allowing just one hit in the final two innings.
The Dirtbags are back in action next weekend against UC San Diego.
