LAST TIME OUT
•   The Dirtbags settled for a split last weekend against the Matadors sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, but falling on Friday and Sunday.
•   Friday was a pitchers' duel that came down to the ninth inning where a costly error led to 2 CSUN runs and a 3-1 loss for the Dirtbags.
•   The bats heated up in the Saturday doubleheader posting 17 runs in the two games totaling 19 hits, including 4 home runs.
•   In Sunday's finale, the CSUN pitching kept the LBSU offense in check allowing a single unearned run.

ABOUT THE DIRTBAGS
•   The Dirtbags were picked to finish second in the Big West Conference pre-season coaches' poll behind conference favorite UC Santa Barbara.
•   Around the country, the Dirtbags were also picked to make the postseason by both D1Baseball.com and Baseball America.
•   Long Beach State was forced to stay off the field during the pandemic, not getting a chance to play any fall ball and were not permitted for team practice until February 15. Because of that, they are one of two teams in the Big West that will play a 40-game conference-only schedule.
•   Two weeks into Big West play, Long Beach State sits in a tie for seventh with Hawaii and CSUN in the standings with a 3-5 record.
•   The pitching staff continues to be the headline of the Dirtbags. Through eight games of conference play, they rank number one in the Big West with a 2.97 team ERA and number two with 81 strikeouts.
•   The offense could not come up with hits in the big situations against CSUN. In four games against the Matadors, they left 41 runners on base. As a team, the Dirtbags are 16-for-70 (.229) with runners in scoring position this season.

SCOUTING THE TRITONS
•   UC San Diego is one of the new institutions in the Big West this season and have gotten off to a 6-10 start to their first year as DI school.
•   The Tritons impressed in the first series of conference play, taking 3 of 4 from Cal Poly on the road.
•   UCSD is hitting .250 as a team led by Jackson Kritsch's .327 average. Anthony Lucchetti is not far behind with a .320 average with a pair of home runs and tied for the team lead with 8 RBI.
•   The Triton pitching staff has had trouble keeping runs off the board posting a 6.46 team ERA with a .303 opponents' average. Among their starters, Cameron Leonard has the lowest ERA at 4.58 in 19.1 innings of work. Izaak Martinez (0.75 ERA in 12 IP) and Luke Mattson (1.64 ERA in 11 IP) are a couple of key arms in the bullpen.
•   The Dirtbags have won both matchups against UC San Diego in the program's history, but the two teams haven't faced each other since 1984.
