Offensive Woes And a Ninth Inning Error Lead to Game One Loss Against CSUN

3/26/2021 10:11:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State’s defensive woes continued on Friday as another ninth inning error plated the winning run for CSUN.

LONG BEACH STATE, Calif. – Long Beach State (1-4, 1-4 BWC) dropped their series opener to CSUN (2-3, 2-3 BWC) on Friday night. Another ninth inning error led to a pair of unearned runs for the Matadors giving them a 3-1 victory.

CSUN got the scoring started immediately as the leadoff hitter connected on a leadoff home run on a 3-2 pitch from Long Beach State starter Alfredo Ruiz.

Ruiz would settle in nicely after the homer though, finishing with six innings pitched allowing just the one run on five hits while striking out six.

It remained a one-run ballgame up until the fourth when Chase Luttrell connected for his second home run of the season. A solo shot to right, it registered at 103 mph off the bat and tied the game up at one.

The tie would be broken in the top of the ninth as CSUN got a two-out single followed by a sky high flyball to left that would be dropped allowing the go-ahead run to come around to score. The next hitter would single into right field to plate third Matador run of the ballgame.

The Dirtbag offense started to rally against CSUN's closer getting two runners on and forcing a pitching change, but a flyout and a strikeout would end it and Long Beach State would fall, 3-1.

Johnathan Lavallee had a great outing out of the bullpen, tossing three innings allowing the two unearned runs on two hits while striking out four.

The offense struggled with runners on base going 3-for-20 (.150) and leaving a total of 12 runners on base, striking out 10 times.

Luttrell led the way going 2-for-4 with the solo home run. Jonathon Long recorded his first multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Connor Kokx was 1-for-4 at the plate tonight with a hit by pitch and a single making it five straight games that he's reached base multiple times.

The Dirtbags will look to bounce back tomorrow in a doubleheader against the Matadors.
