Ninth Inning Fielding Woes Cause Dirtbags to Fall in Season Opener

3/20/2021 1:38:00 AM | Baseball

The Dirtbags made back-to-back errors in the bottom of the ninth, falling to Hawaii 3-2.

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Long Beach State's season opener did not end as planned as back-to-back fielding errors allowed Hawaii to score two runs and walk-off on the Dirtbags by the score of 3-2.

The Dirtbags (0-1) had control of the game from the start until a fielding error at first allowed Hawaii (9-2) to tie it up. The next batter would hit a groundball to short, that was also mishandled allowing the winning run to score giving the Rainbow Warriors the victory.

The Long Beach State pitching staff was lights out tonight as Alfredo Ruiz started, going five-plus allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out six. Johnathan Lavallee would relieve him and throw 2.2 shutout innings striking five.

Devereaux Harrison would enter the game in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and pumped a 95 mph fastball past the Hawaii hitter for the strikeout to escape the jam. Unfortunately, he is credited with his first loss of the season.

Calvin Estrada got things started immediately sending the second pitch of the ballgame into the right-center gap for a double. Two batters later, Connor Kokx singled through the right side to drive in the first run of the ballgame.

The teams exchanged zero's until the fourth as Dirtbag rookie Jonathon Long doubled down the right field line for his first career collegiate hit. He would come in to score on a Thomas Greely bloop single giving LBSU a 2-0 lead.

Hawaii answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth after a walk and consecutive singles pushed a run across to make it 2-1.

That score would hold until the bottom of the ninth. The Rainbow Warriors would get a leadoff single, followed by a hit by pitch to put two runners on with nobody out. Harrison responded with a strikeout and inducing a weak popout to left.

Then heartbreak struck as back-to-back errors gave Hawaii the walk-off victory.

The Dirtbags will look to bounce back as they play a doubleheader against Hawaii. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. PT (1:05 HT).
