Dirtbags Swept by Hawaii in Saturday Doubleheader

3/20/2021 10:44:00 PM | Baseball

With the two losses today, the Dirtbags suffer their first series loss of the season.

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Long Beach State (0-3, 0-3 BWC) was swept in the Saturday doubleheader against Hawaii (11-2, 3-0 BWC) falling 1-0 in game one and 6-4 in game two giving the Dirtbags their first series loss of the Valenzuela era.

Game one of the doubleheader was all about the pitching as the Dirtbags fell 1-0 to the Rainbow Warriors marking the second straight one-run loss to start the season.

Luis Ramirez started for the Dirtbags, surrendering a walk and an RBI double to the first two UH hitters, but settled in nicely after that totaling seven innings allowing just the one run on three hits while striking out eight. Unfortunately, he was outdueled by Cade Kalemanu, as the Hawaii right-hander threw 8.1 scoreless innings scattering five hits while striking out four.

While there was not a lot of Long Beach State offense, Connor Kokx had a nice game going 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch. Aidan Malm, Chase Luttrell, and Toren Craig all had hits as well.

The Dirtbags got something going in the top of the ninth as Kokx and Malm came up with back-to-back one-out singles, but a 6-4-3 double play would end the ballgame handing the Rainbow Warriors their second win of the series.

Game two did not start well for the Dirtbags, particularly for starting pitcher Jack Noble. In his Long Beach State debut, he lasted just 0.1 innings surrendering two runs (one earned) on one hit, three walks, and a hit by pitch.

Already leading by a pair, Hawaii would tack on two more in the second jumping out to an early 4-0 lead.

The Dirtbags finally got some offense going in the fourth as Luttrell led the inning off with a single up the middle and Kokx doubled down the right field line putting two runners in scoring position for Malm. The senior came through with a sac fly for Long Beach State's first run of the day.

LBSU would battle back plating two runs in the fifth on a Luttrell RBI groundout and a Malm RBI double. The Dirtbags would plate another run in the sixth on an Alex Pimentel RBI single cutting the deficit to just one run.

However, Hawaii would tack on an insurance run while their bullpen kept the Long Beach State offense in check the rest of the way as the Rainbow Warriors would come out on top, 6-4.

Malm had a great game two performance, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Luttrell also posted a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.

The Dirtbags will look to salvage a win in the series finale tomorrow as they close out the series against Hawaii at 4:05 p.m. PT.
