Long Beach State finished with five players in double-figures for the first time all season in the defeat.
LAS VEGAS – Long Beach State left it all on the floor, truly giving a full effort on Thursday but the Beach was unable to overcome the top seed in the Big West Tournament, falling 95-87 to UC Santa Barbara to finish the season for LBSU.
In a season where Long Beach State (6-12) faced three separate pauses and lost 10 scheduled games, the Beach came in with a ton of momentum after a dominant victory over CSUN on Tuesday in the first round of the Big West Tournament. LBSU took another shot on Thursday as Joe Hampton, who had started all but one game on the year, went down with a significant knee injury in the first 90 seconds of the game.
With Long Beach State admittedly shocked by the loss of the big man, UC Santa Barbara (20-4) took advantage, opening up a 21-11 edge in the first ten minutes of the game.
The Beach was able to settle down, and climbed back into the contest behind a hot streak of shooting from Colin Slater, but the Gauchos ultimately ended up leading by nine at the half, 44-35.
UC Santa Barbara led by as many as 17 in the second half, but Long Beach State made a late charge back into the game behind full-court pressure. Isaiah Washington cut the lead to five points with 2:47 remaining. LBSU looked to have made another critical stop on the defensive end just after that point, but a kick ball on a loose ball with one second left on the shot clock gave UCSB another chance, and the Gauchos took advantage, once again extending their lead.
The Beach was able to cut the lead down to four on three other occasions, but the Gauchos had an answer either at the line or from their star, Jaquori McLaughlin to hold on for the win.
Ultimately, the Beach had a number of incredible individual performances in the chase for another round in the postseason. Slater led the team with 20 points off of the bench and Washington was one rebound shot of a triple-double with 13 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds Chance Hunter, Jadon Jones and Jordan Roberts all finished in double-figures. Long Beach State had five double-figure scorers for the first time on the year, with all scoring 13 or more, but couldn't make up the difference against the Gauchos.
The 87 points scored in the defeat was tied for the fifth-most in tournament history for LBSU, while Washington's 10 assists were the second-most for the Beach in tournament history, behind Donnie Martin in 1978.
Long Beach State closes the absolutely unlike any other 2020-21 campaign with the loss. All players on the team are eligible to return due to NCAA eligibility relief.
