Beach Basketball Returns Home, Looks to Extend Winning Streak
The Long Beach State women's basketball team returns to the Walter Pyramid for the first time in nearly one month as the Beach host UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Feb. 5 and Saturday, Feb. 6. Both games will tip-off at 4 p.m. LBSU looks to extend its eight-game winning streak, while the Gauchos try to snap a three-game losing skid.Â

About the Beach
• Following a two week hiatus, Long Beach State picked up right where it left off and secured a pair of road victories over UC San Diego to improve to 9-1 overall and 8-0 in Big West Conference action.
• The Beach is riding an eight-game winning streak, its longest such streak since the 2014-15 season.
• Long Beach State went a perfect 6-0 during the month of January as the Beach have not lost a game since Dec. 23 at USC.Â
• When playing inside the Walter Pyramid, Long Beach State is 4-0 this season.
• LBSU boasts three players who are averaging double figures. Leading that group is Justina King with 15.2 points per game, while Naomi Hunt is second on the squad with 11.9 points per game, and Jasmine Hardy rounds out the trio with 10.3 points per game.
• In addition to leading the Beach in scoring, King also leads the team with 20 steals and 32 assists, while contributing 3.0 rebounds per game and two blocks.
• Hunt leads the squad with 17 made three-point field goals. She has now amassed 127 three-point field goals in her career to rank fifth all-time at Long Beach State.
• Hardy is coming off one of her best offensive showings of the season. She led the Beach in scoring in both games at UC San Diego and finished Saturday's game with 17 points to tie her season-best. That mark was just one shy of her career-high.
• Kristyna Jeskeova has been on point for the Beach as she leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game and seven blocks. Additionally, Jeskeova averages 4.9 points per game to go along with 18 steals, and 10 assists.
• Jeskeova is coming off her second double-double of her career as she led LBSU with 12 points and 16 rebounds at UCSD last Saturday. Both of those numbers were new career-highs for the sophomore guard.
• As a team, Long Beach State is shooting 43.2 percent from the field and averaging 67.2 points per game. The Beach has held their opponents to 57.3 point per game for a scoring margin of nearly 10.Â
• In addition to LBSU's solid offensive showing, the Beach still remain a strong defensive team as Long Beach State leads the Big West with 12.1 steals per game, while forcing opponents in to 19.4 turnovers per game.
• Long Beach State has officially changed the nickname for all sports other than baseball to Beach with the NCAA. Please do not refer to LBSU basketball as the 49ers.
Scouting UC Santa Barbara
• UC Santa Barbara comes into the game against Long Beach State with a 2-9 overall record and a 2-5 Big West Conference mark.
• The Gauchos are looking to snap a three-game losing skid after having dropped contests to UC San Diego (73-71), and a pair of games to UC Davis (67-65 and 78-61).Â
• UCSB's two wins this season came on the road at Cal State Fullerton as the Gauchos defeated the Titans 83-54 on Jan. 1 and came back to win 79-60 on Jan. 2.
• The Gauchos have three double-figure scorers led by Taylor Mole's 15.1 points per game. Doris Jones' 14.3 points per game are good for second on the team, while Danae Miller is third with 11.3 points per game.
• Mole, who has played in seven games thus far with just three starts, also leads the Gauchos in rebounding with 8.4 boards per game. She is also the team leader in blocks with 10.
• Miller has set the pace for UC Santa Barbara dishing out 51 assists this season to average 4.6 per game. She also adds 2.4 rebounds per game and nine steals.
• Lauren Lee's 11 steals on the year are tops on the squad, however Jones and Miller are close behind with 10 and nine steals, respectively.
• The Gauchos are shooting 40.3 percent from the field and averaging 64.2 points per game. Additionally, UCSB averages 31.9 boards per game to go along with 14.2 assists per game, 4.6 steals per game and 1.7 blocks per game.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Gauchos
Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara will meet for the 106th and 107th time in program history. The closely contested series is led by the Gauchos 53-52. Last season, the conference foes split the series with LBSU defeating UCSB, 59-53, on Feb. 13 at the Walter Pyramid, before the Gauchos defeated the Beach, 55-47, at the Thunderdome on Feb. 29.
Perfect January
Long Beach State completed the month of January going a perfect 6-0. It was the first undefeated January the program has seen since 1989 when the team went 7-0 under then head coach Joan Bonvicini. The Beach blazed through January 2021 with a pair of victories over CSU Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, and UC San Diego. During that span, LBSU outscored its opponents 392-333 to average 65.3 points per game to its counterpart's 55.5.Â
Offensive Explosion
Long Beach State is averaging 67.2 points per game and shooting 43.2-percent from the field, while averaging 6.9 made three-point field goals per game. The Beach's offense has been solid as they own a 9.9 scoring margin over opponents. After years of being known as a defensively strong team, LBSU's offensive explosion as of late has the squad boasting four players who are shooting 50.0-percent or higher from the field in Myrrah Joseph (55.8), Patricia Chung (52.9), Ma'Qhi Berry (50.0), and Jasmine Hardy (50.0).
Defensively Strong
The Beach's defense has been well-established as LBSU has lead the Big West in steals multiple times over the last several seasons. That continues to hold true as Long Beach State's average of 12.1 steals per game are tops in the league once again. Leading the way for the Beach is Justina King who has totaled 20 steals for 2.0 per game. Coming in behind her are teammates Ma'Qhi Berry and Kristyna Jeskeova with 18 steals each.
In the Hunt
Naomi Hunt is the Beach's leader in made three-pointers as she has amassed 17 thus far to average 1.9 per game. Hunt has now accumulated 127 made threes in her career to take sole possession of fifth place all-time at Long Beach State. Although she his known for her sharp shooting from long distance, Hunt has also contributed in many other ways. In addition to averaging 11.9 points per game, Hunt also averages 4.4 rebounds per game, while registering 16 assists, 14 steals, and one block this season.Â
King is Queen
Junior guard Justina King is the Beach's leading scorer with 15.2 points per game. She also leads Long Beach State with 32 assists and 20 steals. Additionally, King contributes 3.0 rebounds per game and is shooting 37.4 percent from the field, while boasting a 42.4 shooting percentage from long distance.Â
Berry Good
The versatile Ma'Qhi Berry has been a key component for the Beach as she has consistently contributed on both sides of the ball in each game. She is averaging 8.4 points per game with 3.5 rebounds per game. Berry has also totaled 23 assists and 18 steals. Her 2.3 steals per game rank her fourth in the Big West and tops at the Beach. She also comes in 10th in league stats in offensive rebounds with 2.1 per game.Â
Czech Her Out
Kristyna Jeskeova, who hails from Jablonec Nad Nisou, Czech Republic has seemed to settle into her role cleaning up the glass. Jeskeova has led the Beach in rebounding in 6-of-10 games thus far and has reached double-figures in five games. Most recently, Jeskeova recorded her second-career double-double at UC San Diego as she recorded new career-highs in points (12) and rebounds (16) to lead the Beach to their eighth-straight victory. Her 7.5 rebounds per game and seven blocks this season are good for tops on the team.
Myrrah Myrrah With The Ball...
...Who is the fairest one of all? Myrrah Joseph, a junior transfer from Hawaii, has made herself at home at the Beach. She has seen action in nine games thus far, and earned her first start at Long Beach State last weekend at UC San Diego. She is shooting a team-leading 55.8 percent from the field as she has connected on 29-of-52 field goals. She is averaging 7.6 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, with a total of 13 assists, 12 steals, and one block.
Hardy Makes it Look Easy
Junior guard/forward Jasmine Hardy is coming off one of her best performances of the season as she led the Beach in scoring in both games at UC San Diego last week. Hardy poured in 15 points on Friday, then came back and scored 17 to tie her season-high. That mark was just one shy of tying her career-high of 18 which she set a year ago against Hawaii. On the year, Hardy is averaging 10.3 point per game to rank third on the team. She also contributes 3.6 rebounds per game to go along with 13 steals and six assists, while shooting 50.0 percent from the field (27-for-54).
She's Got it Down Pat
Freshman guard Patricia Chung earned her first collegiate start last weekend at UC San Diego. Chung made the most of her weekend at UCSD as she scored a career-high 15 points in back-to-back games to lead the Beach to their eighth-straight victory. In her rookie season, Chung has averaged 9.6 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, while adding 14 assists, and 10 steals.Â
Ki Component
Kianna Hamilton-Fisher has been a key component to the Beach's success this season. After redshirting a year ago due to an injury, Hamilton-Fisher has come back in a big way. She is averaging 4.6 points per game, 3.4 rebounds, per game, and has totaled 13 steals, 12 assists, and two blocks on the year. She led the Beach in rebounding (8) and steals (3) at CSU Bakersfield, and posted a season-high 13 points at UC Riverside. With Hamilton-Fisher in the starting lineup, Long Beach State has gone 8-1 on the year.
