Long Beach State Women's Hoops Takes on Cal Poly on the Road
On the heels of their first Big West Conference losses, Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track this weekend when the Beach go up against Cal Poly in San Luis, Obispo, Calif. The Beach and the Mustangs will face off on Friday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m., before wrapping up the series on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m., at Mott Athletics Center.

About the Beach
• Long Beach State saw its 10-game winning streak snapped last weekend as the Beach dropped a pair of contests to UC Davis at the Walter Pyramid. With the setbacks, LBSU is now 11-3 overall.
• The Beach now sit in second place in the Big West Conference standings with a 10-2 league record.
• LBSU boasts three players who are averaging double figures. Leading that group is Justina King with 13.4 points per game, while Jasmine Hardy is second on the squad with 11.5 points per game, and Naomi Hunt rounds out the trio with 10.7 points per game.
• In addition to leading the Beach in scoring, King also leads the team with 55 assists. She tallied a new career-high nine in the final game of the series against UC Santa Barbara.
• Hardy has heated up as of late recording double-digit performances in five of the last six games to average 14.3 points
per game, including a career-high 19-point, 14-rebound showing against UC Santa Barbara.
• Hunt leads the squad with 17 made three-point field goals. She has now amassed 127 three-point field goals in her career to rank fifth all-time at Long Beach State.
• Kristyna Jeskeova has been on point for the Beach as she leads the team with 7.9 rebounds per game and 10 blocks. Additionally, Jeskeova averages 5.1 points per game to go along with a team-best 32 steals, and 17 assists.
• As a team, Long Beach State is shooting 40.5 percent from the field and averaging 64.6 points per game. The Beach has held their opponents to 57.9 points per game for a scoring margin of nearly seven.
• In addition to LBSU's solid offensive showing, the Beach still remain a strong defensive team as Long Beach State leads the Big West with 11.8 steals per game, while forcing opponents in to 18.6 turnovers per game.
• Long Beach State has officially changed the nickname for all sports other than baseball to Beach with the NCAA. Please do not refer to LBSU basketball as the 49ers.
Scouting Cal Poly
• Cal Poly comes into the game against Long Beach State with a 9-7 overall record.
• The Mustangs are 5-5 in Big West Conference action and are in fifth place in the league standings.
• Cal Poly is coming off of a series split against Cal State Fullerton as the Mustangs defeated the Titans, 70-65, in overtime on Friday, before dropping a 65-49 decision on Saturday.
• Abbey Ellis is the Mustangs' leading scorer as she averages 18.0 points per game on a 41.4 field goal percentage. Ellis also tops the team with 46 steals, while adding 3.9 rebounds per game, 41 assists, and one block on the year.
• Sierra Campisano is second on the squad with 16.9 points per game and she leads the Mustangs with 8.9 rebounds per game. Campisano is also the team leader in blocks with 21.
• Maddie Vick has dished out a team-leading 43 assists this season, while also contributing 4.4 points per game, 2.7 rebounds per game, and 14 steals.
• Overall, Cal Poly is shooting 40.6 from the field and 30.6 from behind the arc, while averaging 63.6 points per game.
• The Mustangs average 38.1 rebounds per game, and have outrebounded their opponents by a margin of 4.1 this year.
• Defensively, the Mustangs have posted 2.3 blocks per game and are averaging 8.7 steals per game. Cal Poly has also allowed 65.9 points per game on 40.8 shooting.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Mustangs
Long Beach State and Cal Poly will meet for the 73rd and 74th time in program history this weekend. In the overall series, the Beach lead the Mustangs, 47-25. However, Cal Poly has won the last two meetings including ending Long Beach State's 2020 season in the Big West Tournament with a 59-48 win over the Beach on March 10. Last season, LBSU and Cal Poly split the regular season series as the Beach won the first match up, 72-69, in Long Beach, while Cal Poly claimed the second meeting, 61-41, in San Luis Obispo.
Defensively Strong
The Beach's defense has been well-established as LBSU has lead the Big West in steals multiple times over the last several seasons. That continues to hold true as Long Beach State's average of 11.8 steals per game are tops in the league once again. Additionally, the Beach rank in the Top 10 in the nation in steals per game as LBSU sits in eighth place. Leading the way for the Beach in steals is Kristyna Jeskeova with 32. Behind her are Justina King (31), and Ma'Qhi Berry (21). The trio are all ranked in the Top 10 in the Big West as Jeskeova in third (2.3 steals per game), King is in fourth (2.2 per game), and Berry is in 10th (1.8 per game).
King is Queen
Junior guard Justina King is the Beach's leading scorer with 13.4 points per game. She also leads Long Beach State with 55 assists. When playing against UC Santa Barbara, King averaged a whopping 7.5 assists per game as she tallied six helpers on Friday, then came back on Saturday and dished out a career-high nine. On the year, she averages 3.9 assists per game which is good for seventh in league stats.
Berry Good
The versatile Ma'Qhi Berry has been a key component for the Beach as she has consistently contributed on both sides of the ball in each game. She is averaging 9.2 points per game with 3.2 rebounds per game. Berry has also totaled 28 assists and 21 steals. Her 1.8 steals per game rank her 10th in the Big West.
Czech Her Out
Kristyna Jeskeova, who hails from Jablonec Nad Nisou, Czech Republic has seemed to settle into her role cleaning up the glass. Jeskeova has led the Beach in rebounding in eight games thus far and has reached double-figures in six games. Jeskeova has recorded two double-doubles on the year and also leads the Beach with 32 steals to average 2.3 per game, which is good for third in the conference.
Hardy Makes it Look Easy
Junior Jasmine Hardy has tallied double-digit scoring performances, including back-to-back double-doubles against UCSB, in five of the last six games. She registered new career-highs in points (19) and rebounds (14) as she helped the Beach to a win over UCSB. Additionally, Hardy's 45.9 field goal percentage is good for fifth in the Big West, while she is tied for third in the league with an 83.9 free throw percentage. Hardy is also averaging 3.2 offensive rebounds per game which is good for second in the Big West.
She's Got it Down Pat
Freshman guard Patricia Chung earned her first collegiate start at UC San Diego on January 29 and made the most of it as she scored a career-high 15 points in back-to-back games to lead the Beach to their eighth- and ninth-straight victories. In her rookie season, Chung has averaged 8.4 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, while adding 16 assists, and 13 steals.
Ki Component
Kianna Hamilton-Fisher has been a key component to the Beach's success this season. After redshirting a year ago due to an injury, Hamilton-Fisher has come back in a big way. Against UC Davis last week, Hamilton-Fisher poured in a season-high 14 points as she made five field goals and connected on two three-pointers. She is averaging 5.7 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, per game, and has totaled 17 steals, 13 assists, and two blocks on the year.
Next Up
Long Beach State will play its final regular season games inside the Walter Pyramid next weekend when the Beach host Hawaii. LBSU and Hawaii will go head-to-head on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27. Both games are set to tip-off at 4 p.m.
