Long Beach State Falls To UC Davis In NCAA Opening Round

Los Angeles, Calif. —The Long Beach State men's water polo season came to an end Thursday afternoon as the Beach lost to UC Davis, 9-8 in overtime in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at UCLA.
Rafael Real Vergara scored four goals, but the Beach never led as UC Davis took an early 1-0 lead in the first goal with a goal from Nic Gross on a power play.
Vergara answered back midway through the period when he lasered in a shot to tie the game 1-1 with 4:47 remaining in the period.
Gross answered with another goal and Matt Morris tied the game 2-2 after the first.
The game featured six ties, but the Beach never led as the Aggies had an answer every time LBSU looked to gain momentum.
After trailing 5-3, Garrett Zaan scored his 100th career goal and Alika Naone score to knot the game at 5-5 with 3:44 remaining in the third.
The two teams continued their back-and-forth battle as Morris and Vergara each scored in the fourth to finish regulation in an 8-8 tie.
In overtime, Holden Neach scored the go-ahead go in the first overtime period.
Defensively Andrej Bosanac and UC Davis's Aaron Wilson had a battle of goalies as both finished with 14 saves. Wilson's biggest save came on a Vergara penalty shot attempt.
