Women’s Soccer Kicks Off the Black & Blue Rivalry Series on Thursday

Long Beach State and UC Irvine renew the black and blue rivalry for its 15th year.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's only game of the week kicks off the Black & Blue Rivalry series with UC Irvine on Thursday. It will be the first full year of the rivalry since the 2018-19 seasons.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Beach remained unbeaten in Big West play with a draw at UC Riverside and a huge 2-1 win at Cal State Fullerton.
• Freshman Zora Standifer made her first collegiate start and recorded her first career shutout making three saves against the Highlanders. The game went a full 110 minutes as neither team could find the back of the net in the double OT draw.
• On Sunday, LBSU enjoyed another dramatic last minute victory, taking down rival Cal State Fullerton 2-1. Lena Silano scored both goals, including the game-winner in the 89th minute off a masterful set piece with Daria Petredes and Kaylee Ramirez.
BEST OF THE BIG WEST
• With an unbeaten record through the first four games of conference play, the Beach finds themselves atop the Big West standings with 10 points and a 3-0-1 record.
• Statistically, Long Beach State is owns the highest save percentage (.806) and is tied for the fewest goals allowed (12) and lowest opponent goals per game (1.00).
FAVORITES TO WIN IT ALL
• The Big West preseason poll was announced on Thursday, Aug. 12 and the Beach found themselves in the top spot with 106 points, edging out defending champion Cal State Fullerton by two points. In addition to the top spot in the poll, senior defender Kaitlin Fregulia was named to the preseason All-Conference Team. She was the lone Beach representative and one of just two defenders on the list.
BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• For the first time in her career, Lena Silano was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week.
• The junior forward scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Fullerton with the second giving the Beach the victory in the 89th minute.
SILANO'S HISTORIC SEASON IN THE MAKING
• Through 12 games, Silano leads the conference in goals (9), points (20), game-winning goals (4), shots on goal (24), and ranks second in total shots (44). Her four game-winners ranks tied for sixth in the entire nation while her nine total goals is tied for 11th in the NCAA.
• With those numbers, she has also started etching her name into the Long Beach State record books. She owns the second-most multi-goal games in a season (3), while her four game-winning goals is tied for fifth most in a season and her nine goals is tied for ninth most.
• The Aguora Hills native is the second fastest in program history (in terms of fewest games) to 6, 7, 8, and 9 goals as well as 20 points in a season.
THE ASSIST QUEEN
• Senior Kaylee Ramirez spends most of her time on the defensive side of the ball, but has proven a crucial part of the offensive success.
• Through 12 games, the defender sits in a tie atop the Big West leaderboards with six assists on the season. It marks the most for the program since the 2015 season and she sits just two shy of entering the top ten in program history.
A NEAR PERFECT CAREER START
• Freshman Zora Standifer made her first ever collegiate start last week in a tough matchup on the road against UC Riverside. She lived up to the challenge keeping the Highlanders off the board for 110 minutes and recording her first career shutout.
• It awarded her a second straight start at Cal State Fullerton where she picked up her first career win and notching two saves against the Titans. The lone goal she surrendered came on a PK in the first half.
BLACK & BLUE RIVALRY SERIES
• The black and blue rivalry series enters its 15th season after the last two years were shortened due to COVID.
• Long Beach State leads the all-time rivalry series presented by Duke's, 15-9 and have not lost it in the last five years.
MAURICIO'S DYNASTY
• Prior to Coach Ingrassia taking the helm of Long Beach State, the team had not had a winning record in the Big West Conference. Since he took over in 2004, the Beach has been over .500 in all but three seasons (14-of-17).
• Over the the last decade, the Beach has been a dominant force in the Big West Conference claiming four Big West Tournament titles and two regular season titles. They have been to the conference tournament finals six different times since 2010.
• Beyond the Big West Conference, Long Beach State has made their presence known nationally as well. Since 2008, the team has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances including an Elite 8 appearance in 2011. That is the furthest run by any team in the Big West.
SCOUTING THE ANTEATERS
• UC Irvine enters the week in fourth place of the Big West standings with a 2-1 conference record. They are 7-4 overall on the season.
• The Anteaters are coming off a perfect 2-0 week with a 2-1 win at Cal State Fullerton and a 2-0 win over UC Riverside.
• As a team, UCI ranks third in the conference with 20 goals on the season while allowing just 13 to their opponents. Scarlett Camberos leads the team with 4 goals and 11 points.
• In net, Glo Hinojosa has 10 games with 9 starts. She has allowed just 9 goals in her appearances and owns a .769 save percentage which ranks second in the conference.
• Long Beach State trails the all-time series 10-13-6, but is 2-1-2 in the last five meetings. Playing at George Allen Field, the Beach has not lost UC Irvine since 2012.
