Long Beach State Battles, but Falls in Overtime to UC Irvine

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (6-5-2, 3-1-1 BWC) suffered their first loss of Big West play, falling 1-0 in overtime to UC Irvine (8-4, 3-1) on Thursday night.
The first half consisted of a lot of back-and-forth as neither team saw any decent scoring opportunities. Kayla Cannon had the only shot on target in the first half for the Beach, launching a shot from the edge of the box but saved by the UCI keeper.
Through the first 45, Long Beach State was outshot 6-3, but Zora Standifer came through with three saves to make sure things remained scoreless.
The second half saw some drama as both teams began to get more physical. The Anteaters were handed a yellow card in the 54th minute and there was a combined 13 fouls over the next 36 minutes to close out regulation.
Cannon recorded the second and final shot on goal at the 56:09 mark, but UCI's Glo Hinojosa made a diving stop toward the far post allowing the Anteater defense to clear it out of bounds.
The lone goal of the night came in the 98th minute as the Long Beach State's clear attempt was weak ending up at Kiera Smeenge's feet. She sent her shot toward the far-post beating Standifer and handing the Beach their first loss of conference play.
The Beach will have the weekend off and return to action next Thursday hitting the road to take on UC Davis. Kickoff against the Aggies is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
