LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (7-5-2, 4-1-1 BWC) went on the road and took down UC Davis (8-7, 3-4 BWC) by the score of 1-0. Lena Silano notched the lone goal of the afternoon, making her just the ninth player in LBSU single-season history to score 10 goals in one year.
Silano's goal came in the 25th minute off a Maddy Perez corner. The Aguora Hills native outjumped the Aggie defense and headed it to the far corner putting the Beach on the board.
With the goal, the junior forward becomes the first to double-figure goals since Ashley Gonzalez scored 11 during her 2016 campaign. It also goes down as her fifth game-winner of the year putting her in a tie for third-most in program history.
Long Beach State held a 1-0 lead at the break and was outshooting UC Davis 6-4 through the first 45 minutes.
It seemed a tale of two halves on Thursday afternoon though, as LBSU found themselves under pressure on defense for most of the remainder of the game.
The Aggies fired off eight shots in the second half, including five within the first 15 minutes coming out of halftime.
However, the defense held strong as all of the shots were heavily contested and only one was on the mark. Morgan Houston-Shepherd led the charge recording her second career shutout and only needed to make one save against the shot barrage.
Long Beach State will look to keep things rolling this weekend as they head to Bakersfield for a matchup with the Roadrunners.
