Long Beach State Prepared for Penultimate Week of Regular Season

The Beach are set for one game in the second to last week of the season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Coming off a pair of road wins last week, Long Beach State is set for its final away game at CSUN in the penultimate week of the regular season.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Beach had a perfect six-point week last week with a pair of 1-0 victories on the road at UC Davis and CSU Bakersfield.
• Lena Silano's header goal in the 25th minute proved to be the difference with LBSU coming out on top 1-0 over the Aggies. The goal put Silano in elite company, becoming just the ninth player in program history to score 10-plus goals in a season.
• Long Beach State had a tremendous defensive effort in Bakersfield, holding the Runners to just one shot over the final 65 minutes. Silano would score her second game-winner of the week with 29 seconds left in double overtime.
TITLE RACE
• Long Beach State currently sits in a tie for second place in the Big West standings. At 16 points, they are tied with UC Santa Barbara and both teams trail Cal Poly by two points. Both teams have three games remaining heading into the final two weeks of the season.
• The Beach, Gauchos, and Mustangs will all face each other over the next two weeks. UCSB and CP face off this Thursday and then both of those teams make a trip to George Allen Field next week to wrap up the season.
FAVORITES TO WIN IT ALL
• The Big West preseason poll was announced on Thursday, Aug. 12 and the Beach found themselves in the top spot with 106 points, edging out defending champion Cal State Fullerton by two points. In addition to the top spot in the poll, senior defender Kaitlin Fregulia was named to the preseason All-Conference Team. She was the lone Beach representative and one of just two defenders on the list.
BEST DEFENSE IN THE BIG WEST
• With two clean sheets last week, Long Beach State now sits alone atop the Big West leaderboards, allowing just 13 goals through 15 games. Their .826 goals against average leads the conference and ranks 61st in the nation.
CLEAN SHEETS
• The Beach defense had a phenomenal week last week, earning a pair of 1-0 shutout victories at UC Davis and CSU Bakersfield. It is the first time they have recorded back-to-back shutouts since the Big West Tournament in 2018 when they shutout UCD and UCSB en route to their fourth Big West Tournament title. They have now registered four clean sheets this season.
MORE NATIONAL ATTENTION
• Lena Silano continues to alter the record book and add to her case for being an All-American. With two game-winning goals last week, she was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.
• It is her third time this season being recognized by TDS, after garnering a pair of Honorable Mentions in September.
• She is the first Beach player named to the Team of the Week since Dana Fujikuni on Nov. 7, 2018.
SILANO'S HISTORIC SEASON IN THE MAKING
• With just three games remaining, Silano leads the conference in goals (11), points (24), game-winning goals (6), and shots on goal (28). Her six game-winners are tied for the most in the nation while her 11 goals rank tied for 12th.
• With those numbers, she has also started etching her name into the Long Beach State record books. In single-season history, she is tied for second most game-winning goals and multi-goal games, tied for fifth most in goals scored, and tied for seventh most in shots with 58.
• The Aguora Hills native is the second fastest in program history (in terms of fewest games) to 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 goals as well as 20 points in a season.
TWO TOP NOTCH KEEPERS
• Redshirt freshman Morgan Houston-Shepherd owns the bulk of the starts and appearing in 11 games. Her .800 save percentage ranks tops in the conference while her 1.01 goals against average is third.
• When it's not Houston-Shepherd in net, it's true freshman Zora Standifer. In her six games played, she owns an .857 save percentage and a microscopic 0.41 goals against average.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
• The Beach has accumulated four Player of the Week honors, three of which have been Defensive Players, marking the most in a single-season for the program since the 2015 season.
• In addition to the 4 Big West Conference weekly honors, Lena Silano has also earned a Top Drawer Team of the Week selection and two Honorable Mentions this season.
MAURICIO'S DYNASTY
• Prior to Coach Ingrassia taking the helm of Long Beach State, the team had not had a winning record in the Big West Conference. Since he took over in 2004, the Beach has been over .500 in all but three seasons (14-of-17).
• Over the the last decade, the Beach has been a dominant force in the Big West Conference claiming four Big West Tournament titles and two regular season titles. They have been to the conference tournament finals six different times since 2010.
• Beyond the Big West Conference, Long Beach State has made their presence known nationally as well. Since 2008, the team has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances including an Elite 8 appearance in 2011. That is the furthest run by any team in the Big West.
SCOUTING THE MATADORS
• CSUN enters the week in eighth place with 2-4 conference record and 3-13 overall.
• They are coming off a 1-0 win last week over UC Riverside that snapped a four-game losing streak.
• As a team, CSUN has surrendered the most goals in the conference with 45 in 16 games. Offensively, they have scored 16 times from 12 different players.
• In net, Amanda Delgado has played 11 games compared to Elizabeth Bornhauser's 7 games, and they combine for a .662 save percentage.
• Long Beach State won the season opening matchup with the Matadors this year by the score of 2-0. Kayla Cannon and Daria Petredes scored the goals with Lena Silano registering a pair of assists. The Beach owns a 15-10-3 all-time record and are 6-1-2 in the last nine meetings.
