LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State has landed another Division I transfer in Isaiah Washington, who joins the Beach after stops at Iona and Minnesota following a tremendous prep career that saw the point guard named Mr. Basketball in the state of New York.
Isaiah Washington; Guard, 6-1, Harlem, N.Y.
(St. Raymond's High School/Minnesota/Iona)
A consensus top 100 recruit out of St. Raymond's High School in New York, Washington gained notoriety quickly on the way to being named Mr. New York Basketball. In 2012 he co-founded the Jelly Fam movement, as well as the Jelly Fam lay-up which he popularized while playing for New Heights AAU program where he averaged 17.5 points and 6.8 assists per game.
Washington originally made his collegiate debut at Minnesota, playing in every game and starting four while averaging 8.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, including setting a career-high with 26 points against Michigan as a true freshman.
As a sophomore, Washington scored 14 points with 13 assists against North Florida for his first career double-double, and closed his time with the Golden Gophers with a nearly 2:1 assist to turnover ratio after playing 28 games, but Washington would transfer to Iona.
Receiving a waiver to play immediately, Washington had an excellent season for the Iona Gaels. Starting 23 games, Washington averaged 11.4 points 5.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game while playing over 33 minutes per game. He recorded a triple-double with 14 points 11 assists and 10 rebounds against Canisius, and had a season-high of 25 points against Monmouth.
He will have one year of eligibility remaining to compete with Beach Basketball.
Monson on Washington:
"With our last scholarship we felt we needed an X factor who could come in, move the needle, and help a team that has nearly everyone back turn the tables and have a successful season. We think Isaiah Washington is that player. He has the ability to create his own shot, make players around him better, and help push our pace back where we like it. Isaiah has one year of eligibility left in his college career, and we think he will have the opportunity to make it a great one at the Beach."
