Throwers Shine On First Day Of Beach Opener

The majority of Long Beach State’s student-athletes will be in action in the final day Saturday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Community College participants took center stage in the first day of the Beach opener, getting their opportunity to compete at Jack Rose Track while all throwers combined for four events on the opening day in Hammer and Javelin.
Marcos Gonzalez had the top finish of the day, placing third overall in the men's javelin with a throw of 61.42 meters, just off of his career best in his first outdoor meet at the Beach.
In the other men's event, Long Beach State showcased their depth with four throwers finishing in the top ten. Riverside City transfer Alec Jones impressed with a toss of 58.60m in his first action at the Beach to place fourth, while Sebastian Coleman topped his collegiate best with a throw of 58.29m to place one spot back in fifth. Ryan Coy took 8th with a throw of 53.39m, while Gavin Fua rounded out the LBSU quartet in 9th place with a throw of 53.13m.
On the women's side, Amanda Truong was the top finisher for LBSU in the hammer with a throw of 50.52m, just in front of Erykah McNairy who tossed a 48.80 as the pair both finished in the Top 10.
Similar to the men's side, a junior college transfer made a splash as Hannah Katches, a transfer from Cuesta College made a strong Division I start in a javelin event she dominated at the juco level, throwing 37.71m to place sixth overall in the event.
The rest of Long Beach State's competitors will be in action tomorrow, kicking off at 10 a.m. with the men's shot pot, women's discus and long jump, and the women's 3000m steeplechase out on the track. Follow live results all day long at www.royalresults.com.
