Smith will compete in the Long Jump Friday and the High Jump Saturday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Jason Smith will become the first Long Beach State student-athlete in the program's modern era to represent the Beach in multiple events at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, participating in both the long jump and high jump.
Held in Albuquerque, N.M., the meet will be broadcast live on ESPN3. First up for Smith will be long jump, which will be contested at 4:15 p.m. PT on Friday evening. The senior will then compete in the high jump which is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. PT on Saturday, March 14. In addition to the broadcast, live results will be available here: https://dt8v5llb2dwhs.cloudfront.net/Indoor20/index.htm
Smith becomes the 17th indoor qualifier in the modern era for Long Beach State, and is the first ever qualifier in two events.
In Smith's signature event, the long jump, the senior has already set the school record at an elite meet, participating in the USA Indoor Track and Field championships and besting the previous record with a mark of 7.88m, breaking the record he shared with 2019 indoor national championship qualifier Kemonie Briggs by three inches.
Seeded tenth in the long jump, Smith also qualified to compete in the high jump as well. Clearing 2.22m (7-03.25) earlier this year at the Don Kirby Invitational, also in Albuquerque, that mark was good enough for 15th in the country to make Smith eligible to finish as an All-American in two disciplines.
Smith is the only qualifier to the NCAA Indoor Championships from the Big West Conference.
