Softball Can’t Overtake Utah Valley In First Of Two Saturday
2/8/2020 10:24:00 AM | Softball
Long Beach State will be back in action in a couple of hours against George Washington.
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Long Beach State took an early lead and threatened late, but couldn't quite pull back even in a 3-2 loss to Utah Valley in the first of two games Saturday at the Puerto Vallarta College Classic.
Long Beach State (1-2) struck first in the second inning. Breezy Wise continued her hot start with a hit, and after a walk to Justine Briones brought up the top of the order, a bloop single from Sydney McCollum brought home Wise to give LBSU a 1-0 lead.
Utah Valley (3-1) scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Linnah Rebolledo led off the inning with a single, and an error and a walk loaded the bases with one out. A single from Basia Query scored two, and an RBI groundout from Abby Doughty brought home a critical third run.
Neither team would threaten until a solid start for the Beach in the top of the sixth. Maddy Ruffin singled to start the inning, followed by a double from Wise and a 10-pitch walk worked by Emily Salazar.
A pitching change paid off for Utah Valley, though, getting a popup and an infield groundout for a pair of outs without advancing runners. Naomi Hernandez drew a walk to cut the lead to 3-2, but a strikeout of Abby Lockman from Devyn Cretz ended the inning.
Kellie White retired all five batters she faced in relief, but a long fly from Alyssa Gonzalez was caught at the wall in left field just feet short of tying the game, and Cretz finished off the save for the Wolverines.
Long Beach State will take a one-game break in Puerto Vallarta and then return to action at approximately 1 p.m. PT against George Washington.
