Softball Bounces Back With Blowout Win Over George Washington

2/8/2020 4:19:00 PM | Softball

10 different batters for Long Beach State picked up hits in the run-rule victory.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Long Beach State scored early and often on the way to a 16-3 run-rule victory over George Washington to close LBSU's second day at the Puerto Vallarta College Classic.

Long Beach State (2-2) wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in support of Kellie White in the circle. Three straight walks to Naomi Hernandez, Abby Lockman and Alyssa Gonzalez set the table for Taylor Rowland who singled up the middle, opening the scoring and giving the Beach a 2-0 lead.

A leadoff error kept the carousel going in the second inning, as the Beach plated two more runs on RBI from Lockman and Gonzalez. An RBI single from Emily Salazar and another George Washington (0-4) error led to three more runs for the Beach in the third inning.

All of that scoring was more than enough for White, who allowed one unearned run on three scattered hits in four innings. Striking out a pair, White turned the ball over to freshman Morgan Quinlan after four innings with a 7-1 lead.

Lockman and Gonzalez combined again for a two out rally in the fifth for more runs. After Lockman's second walk, Gonzalez doubled and junior transfer Rylie Seip hit an RBI single to give the Beach a 9-1 lead.

George Washington was able to scrape across a run in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game, but Long Beach State would be the ultimate beneficiaries.

Six of the first seven batters reached base for Long Beach State in the sixth inning, and the Beach batted around while scoring seven runs in the inning.

GW scored another run on a comebacker that required Quinlan to exit for precaution, but senior Devyn Magnett came on for her first appearance of the year and closed out the final two outs to seal the victory.

10 of 12 batters that came to the plate finished with hits. Gonzalez and Rowland each had a pair while Salazar finished with three, a career-high while tying her best with three runs scored.

Long Beach State closes out its time in Puerto Vallarta with one final game on Sunday, as the Beach takes on Oregon first thing in the morning with first pitch scheduled for 7:30 a.m. PT.
