Beach Falls 4-1 in Puerto Vallarta Finale Against Oregon

2/9/2020 10:31:00 AM | Softball

Kellie White and Breezy Wise both took home All-Tournament honors.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – A three-run second inning from Oregon proved to be the difference, as Long Beach State got a late run off of an RBI double from Naomi Hernandez, but the Beach wasn't able to pull closer in a 4-1 loss to close the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.

Kellie White finished with nine strikeouts on the day, but had trouble finding the plate early against Oregon (5-0). Back-to-back walks and a wild pitch set up the stage for a one-out squeeze play from the Ducks, who scored one run without a hit in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over Long Beach State (2-3).

The Ducks then added more runs in the second inning after another leadoff walk. Singles from Mya Felder and Hannah Galey would bring home one run, and then with the bases loaded a bases loaded single from Terra McGowan made the score 4-0.

White settled in from there, and didn't allow another run in a complete game performance. The Beach left a pair of runners in the second, and then chipped into the lead in the fifth. Justine Briones drew a leadoff walk, and then Hernandez roped a double to the fence in left, scoring the catcher from first to make the score 4-1.

That was all the Beach would get against a trio of Oregon arms, however, as 2019 ace Jordan Dail came out of the bullpen for the Ducks and close out the victory to close the tournament in Puerto Vallarta.

Kellie White finished the opening weekend with a 2-1 record and 17 strikeouts and was named to the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge All-Tournament team, as was fellow senior Breezy Wise who hit .429 for the weekend with a pair of doubles.

Tournament play continues next weekend for Long Beach State, who will travel to Tucson to take part in the Hillenbrand Invitational, where the Beach will have two games against the hosts Arizona, a rematch against Oklahoma and games against Bryant and Northern Iowa.
