Beach Starts Hillenbrand Invitational With 10-0 Shutout Of Bryant

Softball will face the hosts No. 4 Arizona later today.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior transfer had the big hit for Long Beach State, a fifth-inning grand slam to break open a 10-0 win over Bryant to kick off the second tournament of the year, the Hillenbrand Invitational hosted by Arizona.
Long Beach State (3-3) had another big offensive day in support of a combined shutout in the circle. Ashley Coleman got the start and threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Turning the ball over to Presley Miraglia who also threw three scoreless innings on the way to her first career victory. Senior Devyn Magnett then closed out the game with a 1-2-3 seventh after the Beach had piled up their big lead over Bryant (0-1).
Both teams were scoreless through two before Long Beach State broke through in the third. Emily Salazar drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single from Justine Briones to bring up the top of the order. Sydney McCollum pushed the runners over and then a sacrifice fly from Naomi Hernandez put the Beach on the board 1-0.
A leadoff error led to another run in the fourth, as Taylor Rowland hit an RBI single to score Alyssa Gonzalez, and then the Beach went to work in the fifth.
Abby Lockman started the rally with a one-out walk, followed by a Gonzalez single and a Rowland Walk to load the bases in front of Seip. Seip then crushed a homer to right, a grand slam for her first home run at the Beach to put LBSU on top 6-0.
McCollum singled and stole second to get in scoring position in front of Gonzalez, who picked up an RBI with a single in the sixth.
Seip picked up another hit in the seventh to lead off the inning, and hits from Sara Olson, McCollum and Kyra Snyder added three more to account for the final tally.
Long Beach State's game with Arizona is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. PT, but will likely be a little after as early games have been running long in Tucson.
