White’s Strong Start Not Enough In 2-1 Loss At No. 4 Arizona

White struck out six Wildcats but lost a pitcher’s duel with a Top 5 team.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Kellie White had a tremendous effort, holding No. 4 Arizona scoreless after the opening inning, but came up on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel in a 2-1 defeat in Tucson. White struck out six, equaling Arizona ace Mariah Lopez and scattered five hits after the first.
Long Beach State (3-4) struck first in the first inning with a two-out rally. Abby Lockman doubled, and Alyssa Gonzalez traded places with the senior on an RBI double to left, giving the Beach a 1-0 lead after half an inning.
Arizona (6-0) capitalized on a leadoff double by Alyssa Palomino to strike back and take the lead in the bottom half. An RBI single from Malia Martinez tied the game, and after another hit loaded the bases, a walk to Hannah Martinez put the Wildcats in front 2-1 before White got out of the inning on a strikeout of Ivy Davis.
Both pitchers were in control the rest of the way, as White limited trouble as did Lopez.
Long Beach State's best opportunity came in the third inning, as Naomi Hernandez hit a two-out double down the right field line, and Abby Lockman singled and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Lopez was able to strike out Gonzalez to end the threat however. The Beach had two hits the rest of the way, and were set down in order in the seventh to close out the game.
The Beach will get an opportunity to bounce back with two more games Saturday in Tucson. First, Long Beach State well get a rematch with No. 2 Oklahoma after an opening weekend defeat, and then close the day with a contest against Northern Iowa. The Beach and the Sooners will get things going at 1 p.m. PT.
