Long Beach State will have more than 40 athletes competing at the MPSF Indoor Championships this weekend in Seattle. LBSU will go up against the top athletes on the west coast looking to qualify for a trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships Mar. 13-14 in New Mexico.
SEATTLE – Long Beach State Track & Field is back in the Pacific Northwest this weekend, competing in the MPSF Indoor Championships. LBSU will send over 40 athletes up to the University of Washington for the conference championships, running Friday and Saturday at Dempsey Indoor Facility.
Â
One of the key performers this week will be senior Jason Smith, who will be among the favorites in two events: men's high jump and men's long jump. Earlier this month, he tied the school record at this same facility with a leap of 25-07.25 in the long jump to win the event at the UW Invitational. He has subsequently broken that mark and enters as the top qualifier in the event, looking to lock down an individual conference title. Smith is also No. 4 in the field for the men's high jump.
Â
Joining Smith in the jumps is Micqwaun Wright, who is the No. 7 qualifier in the men's triple jump. Teammate Tegbir Jhutty is No. 12 entering that event as four of the 18 competitors in total will be representing the Beach.
Â
In the throws, Charlie Vernoy is competing in a pair of events. He ranks fifth in the men's weight throw and 11th in the men's shot put entering the meet. He has plenty of company in the weight throw, with Sebastian Coleman checking in at No. 10, Gavin Fua at 11, Alec Jones at 12, and Anthony Sommers at No. 14. On the women's side, Amanda Truong is the No. 11 qualifier in the weight throw going into the weekend.
Â
Action starts at Noon on Friday with field events while Saturday's action gets going at 10 a.m. Live scoring for the meet will be provided through Live.Athletic.net.
