
Long Beach State Athletes Continue Indoor Competition in New Mexico

The Beach concluded its team efforts at the Don Kirby Elite on Friday, while senior Jason Smith was one of three athletes with Long Beach State ties competing at the 2020 USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Beach concluded action at the Don Kirby Elite on Friday with some noteworthy performances, particularly in the distance races. Meanwhile, senior Jason Smith stuck around to represent the Beach in the 2020 USATF Indoor Championships hosted in the same building, and was the top collegiate finisher while setting a new school record in the men's long jump.

Starting with the mile, Raymon Ornelas won his heat in an altitude-adjusted time of 4:14.61 to place fifth on LBSU's all-time list. In the men's 800m, Cole Bosley placed sixth in the race with his time of 1:54.68. In the women's 800, Kylee Strausser ran a 2:15.03 to move into fifth in Beach history for that event.

In the women's mile relay, the team of Natalie Tolento, Madison Golden, Naomi Peterson and Quwshayah Peters ran a time of 3:52.23 to place fourth on LBSU's all-time list.

In the field, Micqwuan Wright posted a mark of 48-07.50 to land at No. 9 on LBSU's indoor records list for the men's triple jump.

At the USATF Indoor Championships later in the day, Smith set a new school record with a jump of 25-10.25 in the men's long jump. He was in third place until the last round, and finished just four inches shy of the winning mark. He was fourth overall in the event but claimed the honor as the top collegiate finisher to continue a stellar senior indoor season.

Elsewhere at the USATF Indoor Championships, LBSU assistant coach Jaide Steptor advanced to the women's 400m final, which will take place on Saturday. Former LBSU sprinter Courtne' Davis was scheduled to compete, but her 60m prelim was cancelled. She will advance to the semifinal round on Saturday in Albuquerque.
