Long Beach State Powers Past UC Riverside, 74-44, in Big West Conference Opener

Naomi Hunt recorded her fifth-career 20-point performance in the victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Everything was clicking for Long Beach State on Sunday evening at the Walter Pyramid. The Beach shot 55.8-percent from the field and 64.3-percent from long distance and had three players score in double figures as LBSU rolled past UC Riverside in the Big West Conference opener.
The Beach (2-1, 1-0 Big West) were led offensively by redshirt junior forward Naomi Hunt who recorded her fifth-career 20-point performance. Hunt knocked down 8-of-14 field goals and was 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, all while adding eight rebounds, three steals, and one assist.
Hunt led a trio of double-figure scorers as redshirt junior guard Ma'Qhi Berry contributed 14 points of her own, while junior guard Justina King added 11. Berry had a solid game on both sides of the ball as she led the Beach defense with five steals. Meanwhile, King posted five boards, three assists, and one steal.
Sophomore Kristyna Jeskeova turned in her second-straight double-figure rebounding game as she tallied 10 boards to go along with two steals, and one assist in another strong performance.
LBSU broke the game open in the first quarter as the Beach used a 17-0 run, highlighted with back-to-back threes from King to take a commanding 19-5 lead over UC Riverside (1-3). The Beach never relinquished their lead as they held a 34-17 advantage over the Highlanders by halftime.
The second half saw UCR cut the Beach's lead down to 11 (24-13), but Long Beach State utilized a timeout to take the Highlanders out of rhythm and push its lead back up to 19 (32-13) with just 2:20 left in the quarter.
The Beach led by as many as 33 points (72-39) with just 2:45 remaining in the game and came away with a 30-point victory.
UC Riverside shot 32.7-percent from the field and was limited to just 16.7 percent from long distance. Long Beach State forced the Highlanders into 22 turnovers and came away with 25 points off of turns. The Beach also held the edge in rebounds (34-31), assists (18-12), and steals (16-11).
The Highlanders were led offensively by Keilanei Cooper's 19 points, while Jordan Webster added 11 points.
Long Beach State and UC Riverside will go head-to-head on Monday, Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
