The Beach Takes Down UC Riverside, 71-66, on the Road

LBSU boasted five double-figure scorers, while Kristyna Jeskeova posted 12 rebounds in the victory

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In a game that came down to the wire, Long Beach State emerged victorious over UC Riverside, 71-66, on Tuesday evening at the SRC Arena.
With just 2.9 seconds remaining in a one-possession game (69-66), sophomore Kristyna Jeskeova picked up a key steal to put LBSU back in the driver's seat. Following the Jeskova steal, junior Justina King sunk both her free throws to secure the Beach (3-1, 2-0 Big West) win over the Highlanders (1-4, 0-2 Big West), 71-66.
King's pair of made free throws to end the game earned her her eighth-career 20-point performance, and her second of the season. In addition to leading all scorers, King also contributed three rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.
She led five LBSU scorers in double-figures as Kianna Hamilton-Fisher registered 13 points, Naomi Hunt posted 11, while Myrrah Joseph and Patricia Chung each added 10 off the bench.
Jeskeova was a key performer for the Beach as she led the way with 12 rebounds, five points, four assists, two blocks, and the steal that secured the win.
The game was back-and-forth throughout as there was a total of 12 ties and 16 lead changes in the first three quarters. The two teams found themselves deadlocked at 52-52 to start the final 10 minutes of action. However, Long Beach State broke the fourth quarter open as the Beach kicked off the frame with nine-straight points, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Hamilton-Fisher and Jeskeova forcing a UCR timeout at 7:49.
After the break in action, the Highlanders began to chip away at the Beach lead and used a 7-0 run to make it a one-point game (67-66) after a jumper from Keilanei Cooper with just 1:28 remaining. The Beach countered with a jumper from King putting LBSU back up by three (69-66), before Jeskeova got the ball back for Long Beach State.
LBSU shot 46.3-percent from the field, while UC Riverside shot 42.6-percent. The closely contested game saw the Beach hold the advantage in rebounds (35-34) and blocks (4-1). However, the Highlanders led the way in steals (11-8). Both teams were even in the assists column with 14 each.
UC Riverside had four double-figure scorers led by Jordan Webster's 19-point performance. Cooper finished with 13, while Jada Holland added 12, and Kari Kyrkjebo collected 10.
Long Beach State will return to action on Friday, Jan. 1 at CSU Bakersfield at 4 p.m. The Beach and the Roadrunners will face off the following day, on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m., as well. Both games will be streamed on ESPN3.
