LBSU Women’s Basketball Comes Away with a 61-57 Road Win at CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Long Beach State picked up its third-straight win as the Beach came away with a 61-57 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Friday evening at the Icardo Center.
The Beach (4-1, 3-0 Big West) went head-to-head with the Roadrunners (1-3, 0-1 Big West) and took an early 10-0 lead, but CSU Bakersfield battled back to even the score at 10-all. From there, the two teams matched each other point for point with LBSU consistently holding the lead throughout the contest until the fourth quarter.
The closely contested match saw the Beach hold the lead over the Roadrunners for just over 34 minutes. However the Roadrunners kept it close and eventually evened the score at 51-51 with 8:26 remaining in the game. Long Beach State was unfazed as the Beach continued to play their game.
With the game knotted at 54-54 at 4:41 left to play, Justina King broke the final tie of the game with a made free throw. From there, LBSU pushed its lead up to three (60-57) before winning by four (61-57) on a made free throw by Berry to seal the victory.
CSU Bakersfield shot 42.6-percent from the field to LBSU's 40.0-percent shooting. Additionally, the Roadrunners held the edge in assists (14-12). However, Long Beach State made the most of its opportunities as the Beach led the Roadrunners in rebounding (34-39), steals (12-7), blocks (1-0), and forced CSUB into 21 turnovers.
Junior Jasmine Hardy led the Beach offensively with 17 points, just one off of her career-high, as she shot 50.0-percent from the field (6-for-12), while adding three rebounds and two steals. Joining Hardy in double-figures was King with 12 points, while Naomi Hunt, Kianna Hamilton-Fisher, and Patricia Chung each added nine points.
Hunt and Hamilton-Fisher both earned three steals to lead the squad, while Ma'Qhi Berry's four assists were tops on the Beach, and Myrrah Joseph led LBSU in rebounding with six boards.
Bakersfield was led by Jayden Eggleston, who led all scorers with 22 points, while adding five rebounds and one steal. Meanwhile, Miracle Saxon was one rebound shy of a double-double as she finished with 12 points and nine boards.
Long Beach State and CSU Bakersfield will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m., at the Icardo Center Bakersfield, Calif. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
