Long Beach State Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight

The Beach came from behind in the second half to secure the victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team scored 11-straight points in the second half en route to a 68-59 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday evening at the Icardo Center.
The Beach have now won four straight contests to improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in Big West action, while the Roadrunners drop to 1-4 on the year and 0-2 in league play. The 4-0 start to Big West Conference play marks the best start for Long Beach State in league action since the 2014-15 season.
The Beach trailed in the first half by as many as nine on two occasions as the Roadrunners shot 46.7 percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes. However, Long Beach State stayed within striking distance and whittled CSU Bakersfield's lead down to one (36-35) at halftime.
Coming out of the intermission, LBSU used an 11-0 run to take a 50-41 lead as Justina King contributed five points during that span with a three and a jumper to force CSU Bakersfield to take a timeout. The Roadrunners came out of the break in action and cut the Beach's lead down to five (50-45) before LBSU took a 52-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
The final 10 minutes of action saw the Beach open up an 11-point lead (58-47) on a three from Patricia Chung with 8:54 on the clock. Although the Roadrunners reduced the Beach's lead to eight (58-50), LBSU went back up by 11 (62-51) thanks to a second chance layup by Chung with 6:44 remaining. The Beach would go on to take the game by a score of 68-59.
King led all scorers with 16 points, while Chung and Myrrah Joseph came off the bench to contribute 12 points each. Chung's 12 points are a new career-high for the freshman as are her six rebounds. King tallied five boards, six assists, and one steal. Joseph finished the game with four rebounds and one assist.
Ma'Qhi Berry led the Long Beach State defense with four steals as she accounted for half of the Beach's swipes on the night. With Berry leading the charge, LBSU forced CSU Bakersfield into 15 turnovers as the Beach went on to convert 14 points.
Long Beach State shot 42.6 percent from the field in the game, while CSU Bakersfield shot 40.4 percent. The Beach outrebounded the Roadrunners, 39-32.
CSU Bakersfield had two players reach double-figures as Andie Easley led the way with 13 points, while Lexus Green finished with 11. Jayden Eggleston added nine points, seven boards, and four assists.
The Beach will return home to the Walter Pyramid to host Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Jan. 8 and Saturday, Jan. 9. Both contests will trip-off at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
