No. 5 Men’s Water Polo Starts Season With Two Wins

Long Beach State picked up wins over Fresno Pacific University and UC Davis.
LA JOLLA, Calif.—No. 5 Long Beach State opened up the 2019 season with a strong start on the road at the Triton Invitational, the road at the Triton Invitational, picking up wins over Fresno Pacific (0-1) and UC Davis (1-1).
The Beach opened up their season with a comfortable 19-7 win over Fresno Pacific, outscoring the Sunbirds 4-3 in the first quarter to take the lead. Sophomore center Theodoros Pateros lead Long Beach State (2-0) with four goals, two of them coming in the third quarter.
Senior Johnathan Wong, Junior Elijah Graves and Sophomore Matt Morris each added three goals in the win for the Beach. Curtis Casper also contributed with one goals and Andrew Goodenough, Curtis Casper and Joshua Spence each added one goal.
Junior Marwan Darwish lead the beach with three saves which gave the Beach a 15-5 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
The opening day of the season continued with an overtime matchup against UC Davis (1-1), ranked No. 10. Long Beach State trailed after the first quarter 2-0, but the Beach bounced back behind senior Johnathan Wong, who scored a game-high four goals.
Junior Quinten Osborne, Senior Austin Stewart both tallied two goals in the dramatic win over UC Davis. With 1:20 left in the second overtime, Matt Morris scored his second goal of the night to give Long Beach State the win.
The Triton Invitational continues tomorrow, as Long Beach State will play two more games after continuing to advance through the winner's side. As the winners of their group, Long Beach State will face No. 13 UC Irvine in the first matchup between the Black and Blue Rivals this season at 10:40 a.m.
