Men’s Water Polo Finishes Opening Weekend As Triton Invitational Runners-Up

Long Beach rallies to beat No.10 UC Irvine but falls to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara.
LA JOLLA, Calif.— After beating UC Irvine to start the Triton Invitational 3-0, No. 5 Long Beach State was tripped up in the final game of the opening weekend tournament by UC Santa Barbara.
In the first contest of the day, the Beach won a tough overtime battle against No. 10 UC Irvine. In a defensive battle befitting the Black and Blue Rivalry, the Beach held a 3-2 lead at halftime and the teams went into overtime tied at 7. Garrett Zaan scored two goals to lead LBSU to the win, while Austin Stewart led the way with four goals.
Junior Theodoros Pateros and Sophomore Curtis Casper each added two goals in the win for Long Beach State. Marwan Darwish, made thirteen saves, five coming in the second quarter, to help bring the Beach to victory.
In the second match of the day against UC Santa Barbara, the Gauchos took an early lead behind five second quarter goals. Goals by Matto Morris, Pateros, Stewart and Zaan in the third quarter helped LBSU get back into the contest, trailing by just one goal. UCSB was able to hold off the Beach in the end and claim the win 12-9.
Tournament play continues for the Beach next weekend on Saturday, September 14th at the Inland Empire Classic in Redlands.
