LBSU takes down UC Davis 11-10 in first game of MPSF SoCal Tournament.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.– Freshman Rafael Real Vergara had an outstanding debut for No. 8 Long Beach State, helping the Beach hold off No. 9 UC Davis by scoring a team-high four goals in the opening game of the MPSF SoCal Tournament.
UC Davis (5-5) took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter, and scored first in the second but Long Beach State (10-3) charged back to take the victory. Tied at 4-4, the Beach found Theodoros Pateros just before the end of the half to take a 5-4 lead into the break.
In the third, the Beach outscored the Aggies 4-2 to extend their lead to three at 9-6. The Aggies made things interesting in the fourth, but a key goal from Matt Morris kept the lead at two for the Beach in the final two minutes. A critical final save from Marwan Darwish sealed the win for Long Beach State, one of ten for the senior.
Long Beach State was fueled by Real Vergara who scored four goals in his first start of his LBSU career. Austin Stewart added two goals and Eduardo Wainberg, Garrett Zaan, Nemanja Bakic, Pateros, and Morris all contributed one goal for the win.
