Men’s Water Polo Drops A Pair Saturday AT MPSF SoCal Tournament

The Beach finishes tournament play tomorrow.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — After taking No. 3 Stanford to the wire in a 14-13 defeat, No. 8 Long Beach State Men's Water Polo suffered a second loss in the consolation rounds of the MPSF SoCal Tournament against No. 5 USC, falling 9-6.
In a hard fought game against No. 3 Stanford (8-1), Long Beach State (10-5) fell to the Cardinal 14-13 Saturday morning. Stanford took a 10-5 lead after the first half, but Long Beach State fought back scoring eight goals in the second half.
Rafael Real Vergara continued to impress, scoring six goals as Long Beach nearly toppled the No. 3 team in the country. Along with Vergara, senior Austin Stewart had a big morning scoring three goals and securing six steals. Garrett Zaan had two goals and Nemanja Bakic and Theodoros Pateros had one goal each in a hard fought battle against the Cardinal.
In the second game of the day, Long Beach State was even USC (6-2) after the first quarter behind a pair of goals from Real Vergara. The Trojans rebounded with four unanswered goals in the second period and led 6-2 at the half.
The Beach cut the lead to two with a pair of goals to start the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 7-5 after a power-play goal from Stewart, but the Trojans held on for a 9-6 victory. Stewart and Real Vergara and Matt Morris each finished with a pair of goals each to lead LBSU. Senior Marwan Darwish led the defensive effort, making 20 saves against the Trojans.
Long Beach State closes the MPSF SoCal Tournament and non-conference tournament play on Sunday, facing No. 6 Pepperdine in the seventh-place game at 8:30 a.m., hosted by UCLA.
