BEFORE KICKOFF
• Long Beach State had its scheduled season opener at Arizona canceled due to persistent lightning strikes in Tucson. The teams will look to reschedule the match later this season.

• Due to the cancellation, Long Beach State instead opened its season against UCLA for the second straight season. Also for the second straight year, the Beach came up short in a 1-0 loss to the Bruins.

• UCLA entered the match ranked No. 4 in the country, and scored the game's only goal in the 13th minute after getting off to a strong start. LBSU was able to settle in and played an even match against the visitors over the final hour-plus of the game.

• Junior Marta Alemany Sanchez made her debut in goal for the Beach and was a standout performer. The JUCO transfer, who originally hails from Spain, made six of her seven saves in the first half to keep the Beach squarely in the match.

• Junior Kayla Cannon matched her career high with three shots against the Bruins, and sophomore Elysia Laramie added a pair as well.

• In addition to Alemany Sanchez in goal, freshman Aleea Caceres also made her Beach debut in the midfield, playing 55 minutes off the bench.

• Following the team's performance against UCLA, Long Beach State is now receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings.

LOOK WHO'S BACK
• Buoyed by the return of 2017 Big West Defensive Player of the Year Kaitlin Fregulia, the Beach boasts an experienced back line. Juniors Sarah Pilster and Kaylee Ramirez have a combined 77 appearances over their first two years on campus. Santa Clara transfer Myah Baksh joins the ranks and should partner nicely with Fregulia at center back.

In the midfield, the Beach will be looking to talented sophomores Sierra Castles and Charlotte Guillory to take the next step in their development and become facilitators for the Beach. Senior Taylor Bistline provides veteran leadership and was a Preseason All-Conference selection. In the junior class, Nadiyah Siqueiros has made strides during the offseason and should be a key contributor for the Beach, while Kayla Cannon provides valuable pace and playmaking ability on the outside.

Up front, LBSU has a pair of Preseason All-Conference selections in senior Katie Pingel and sophomore Elysia Laramie. Pingel is LBSU's leading returning scorer after netting four times last season. She has made 38 starts over the past two seasons with the Beach and will likely need to shoulder more of the scoring load after the departure of Long Beach State's career scoring leader Ashley Gonzales and 2018 Big West Midfielder of the Year Dana Fujikuni. Laramie was an All-Freshman Team selection after scoring twice last season. The sophomore forward was also the first player on the scoresheet in LBSU's scrimmage win over FC Golden State, scoring in the third minute.

Long Beach State will need to replace goalkeeper Imani McDonald, who made 39 starts between the posts in her four years on campus. Top candidates are redshirt sophomore Ashley Seymour, who impressed against the Argentina National Team on LBSU's foreign tour to France this summer, and transfer Marta Alemany Sanchez, who has experience with the Spanish Youth National Team. LBSU also has depth in goal with freshmen Abigail Trengove and Morgan Houston-Shepherd.

WELCOME TO THE BEACH
In addition to Baksh and Alemany Sanchez, LBSU also adds transfer Amanda Jones from Arizona State. The Long Beach native played in 22 games over her first two seasons in Tempe. LBSU also has a talented freshman class on campus with Aleea Caceres, Jillian Hiraga, Sam Encarnado, Alexis Komisza, Amanda Meichtry and Emily Jauregui joining the Beach this season.

PARIS TRIP
• Prior to the season, the Long Beach State women's soccer team went on a foreign tour to France for the 2019 Women's World Cup. The Beach played a pair of exhibition matches against the Argentina National Team during an 11-day trip to Paris and surrounding cities. LBSU then witnessed the Argentines earn their first Women's World Cup point during a 0-0 draw with Japan at the Parc de Princes. The Beach capped off the trip in Reims, France where the team witnessed Team USA's historic 13-0 victory over Thailand in their World Cup opener.

SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
• Penn State comes to Long Beach with a 1-1 record on the season, but the record is misleading. The Nittany Lions lost their season opener to No. 3 Stanford, 2-1, before thumping Hofstra, 6-0. Penn State has had six different players score a goal this season, with Frankie Tagliaferri leading the way with two following her brace against Hofstra.

• In addition to being ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll, Penn State was also chosen as the preseason favorite in the Big Ten. There were three Nittany Lions--Amanda Dennis, Ellie Jean, and Kaleigh Riehl--on the 42-player Big Ten Preseason Honors List.

SERIES RECORD vs. PENN STATE
• Long Beach State is 0-1 against Penn State, losing the only meeting between the two programs on Sept. 4, 2016. The Beach dropped a 2-1 decision against the then-defending national champions on George Allen Field.

SCOUTING THE TOREROS
• San Diego is 2-0 after dominating its first two opponents by a combined 7-0 margin. The Toreros opened the season with a 3-0 win over Long Island before thumping Holy Cross, 4-0. USD was able to play against Arizona in its preseason scrimmage and lost 3-0 to the Wildcats. LBSU was supposed to open the season against Arizona but had the game cancelled due to lightning on Aug. 22. Monday's game will be USD's first away game of the year.

• Halle Walls and Milan Moses each have two goals scored to lead the Toreros, while Jamie Goralski and Michaela Foster each have a goal and two assists through two games. USD has outshot its opponents 32-7 with a 20-2 edge in shots on goal.

SERIES RECORD vs. SAN DIEGO
• San Diego leads the all-time series with the Beach, 11-4-3, but Long Beach State has the edge recently. The Beach won the previous meeting, 3-0, in Long Beach during the 2017 season. Over the last eight meetings, LBSU is 4-2-2 including a 1-0 win in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen back in 2011.
