LONG BEACH, Calif. – A record crowd of 2,303 fans filled the sidelines at George Allen Field on Sunday evening for Long Beach State's season opener against No. 4 UCLA (2-0-0), and the visiting Bruins were able to make an early goal stand in a 1-0 victory over the Beach (0-1-0). UCLA got off to a strong start over the first half hour, but Long Beach State settled into the game and played a much more even game over the final hour.
Junior goalie Marta Alemany Sanchez made her debut for the Beach and was impressive, recording seven saves against a high-powered Bruins attack. UCLA outshot the Beach 14-5 in the opening 45 minutes, but the Bruins held just a 7-5 shot advantage after halftime.
The Beach nearly equalized in the 65th minute off a corner kick, as Mackenzie Magaoay found the ball at her feet but had her shot cleared off the line. The ball sat in the six-yard box briefly, allowing Taylor Bistline to take a swing as well, but the Bruins were eventually able to get the ball clear and deny LBSU's best scoring chance.
Junior Kayla Cannon led the Beach with three shots in the game to match her career high and sophomore forward Elysia Laramie added a pair of shots as well.
Alemany Sanchez made six of her seven saves in the first half and joined freshman Aleea Caceres in making their Long Beach State debuts on Sunday.
The slate doesn't get much easier for the Beach as No. 6 Penn State is next up on the schedule. The Nittany Lions visit George Allen Field on Friday night at 7 p.m.
