Natalia Munoz won the main draw in both singles and in doubles with Lalita Devarakonda.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State kicked off the summer with a strong start as Natalia Munoz won the singles title over the weekend at the ITA Summer Circuit event held at Pomona-Pitzer college, and also took the doubles title along with her partner Lalita Devarakonda.
The duo had a strong season last year, earning All-Big West honors while posting an 18-5 overall record and going 16-4 in dual matches.
That success rolled into this weekend's competition. Seeded in a strong position, Munoz and Devarakonda advanced to the semifinals, winning 8-5 before taking the title with a victory over Rhode Island's Paulina Loredo and her partner Bella Nguyen 8-5.
In singles, both players advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw with a pair of victories. At that point, Munoz defeated Lindsey Hung of Utah comfortably in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, while Devarakonda was knocked out in a loss to UCLA's Taylor Johnson.
In the semifinals, Munoz avenged the loss with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Johnson, and then took the singles championship in a hard-fought match with Georgia's Annette Goulak, bouncing back from a first-set loss to win back-to-back tiebreakers in sets two and three.
The ITA office will track points and post a "points race standings" each week on the ITA website. At the conclusion of the circuit, the top five men and the top five women will receive automatic entry into the Oracle ITA National Summer Championships.
